Need help with internet connection planning

Hello,

I have a few questions for the community.

1. If I connect a server to my router, will it be able to function as a remote server (allow users to connect to it through an SSH connection from another internet connection) or will it be unable to because of not having its own IP? When I go to configure the server and see what connections (I use the "ifconfig" command on ubuntu 20.04 server edition) it just shows my private IP address (192.168.1.xxx) but when I speedtest it I can see that it connects to my public IP for the test. I have only been successful using an SSH connection with its private IP on a computer using the same network.

2. If I were to plug it into one of those things with a bunch of ethernet ports that would be connected to my modem instead of the router, would it function properly? If so, what are they called and what are some affordable options?

If anyone can answer these I would really appreciate the help. Thanks!

1. You normally need to setup port forwarding to make the ports on the server public

2. Do you mean a switch? Any switch should work, just get a cheap gigabit unmanaged one. Port forwarding will work the same.
