You should put the cooler on so you can see how well it spreads under mounting pressure, but that looks like plenty to me. Quick tip for the future: you rarely have to spread out the thermal paste on a desktop processor. The pressure of the cooler should spread it on its own. Not that you did anything wrong here, but you could skip that step in your next build.
