RTX 3080 vs 6900XT

LauriHimself

hey folks 😃

i am planning to do a new build over the course of the year.

bying a graficscard isn't due till some month down the line, but as i doubt that prices will recover till then, or even this year, i thought i'll ask you all for your opinion now:

so, where i live, the 3080 and the 6900XT are going for the same price (1300€) at the moment (6900 new from retail for 1300; 3080 only available from ebay and such, retail pricing, if available about 1100)

if i want to play at 5120x1440 would i benefit from DLSS enough to get the 3080 over the 6900XT?

as i couldn't care less about raytracing, i'm really drawn to team red this time.

isn't amd working on a tech similar to dlss?

also, i guess i would benefit from almost double the vram (10 vs 16) at that resolution, right?

the 3090 isnt an option as that card is about 2500.

also the 6800XT is only 100 less than the 6900XT so not really a sensible buy here.

looking forward to all your input ❤️

1. DLSS is great when it's available, but even now the selection of games that support DLSS are limited.

2. AMD is also working on a similar technology to DLSS, and there are some existing technologies that have similar results (but work differently) such as AMD CAS Fidelity FX

3. I wouldn't worry about VRAM because by the time 1440p ultrawide/4k needs more than 10GB of VRAM, all of these cards will require settings reduction to run smoothly and thus, the amount of VRAM needed will go down as well as a byproduct of those settings reductions.

The 6900XT makes the most sense in your scenario because you don't care about RTX at all, the 6900XT will perform better than the 3080 most of the time, and the 6800XT isn't much less expensive.

Yes, AMD is working on a DLSS competitor. How good it will actually be nobody knows. Almost certainly not as good as DLSS to start, DLSS itself was pretty garbage in its first implementations back in 2019. Of course, there are hardly any games that support DLSS.

It's not 8GB vs 16GB of RAM, it's 10 vs 16, and the 3080's RAM is faster GDDR6X versus regular GDDR6, although how much that matters (or will matter) is debated.

The other thing to consider is if you have any use for Nvidia's features not strictly related to gaming performance, like the NVENC encoder and RTX voice for streaming.

If you don't, at the same price I would get the 6900 XT purely for more raw performance, but you won't regret picking either.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

On the subject of resolution scaling tricks, I actually tried AMD's Fidelity FX on both my RTX 3080 and my older RX 580 on CP2077.

It doesn't really look that bad, and it does a pretty good job of helping boost framerate.

If you're not interested in Ray Tracing, the 6900 XT is the better buy.
