getting data off a 15 year old computer.

The Gamer On Wheels

Posted this to Reddit yesterday because of the bigger audience, but I was wondering if there's anything else I should be concerned about. Here is the link to my post for more detail.

my family does not remember why the computer stopped working. It has been sitting on a shelf for the past five or six years. I bought that enclosure because it seemed like the best option considering we do not have a monitor for the computer anymore. Even if I could find one I do not even know if it boots up anymore. A friend of mine is coming over later this week to help me take the computer apart as I do not have fully functional hands.

Just pull the drive out and connect it to the adapter. That's it. The computer should have a standard SATA hard drive in it, so you don't need any cables to connect it to the adapter.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

Yeah like just look up sata and ide on google it's extremely obvious which is which. One is a tiny data and power connector. The other is a long and thick data connector with a 4 pin power connector.

It’s a sata drive, reading the HP page for the machine on the Reddit post.

just plug it into any other modern desktop you have or get a sata to USB adapter to plug it into a laptop or whatever

SATA is 4 pin right? I know what good specs are on paper, but as I have never taken apart or built a machine before I've never seen computer parts in person. You can only get so much information from watching Linus. It's good information, but nothing beats experience.

No sata is sata power. Ide is normally 4pin power.

Literally just google sata and ide you'll notice the differences in seconds.

No cables are needed to connect the hard drive to the adapter you bought.

@ProjectBox153is correct. The adapter already HAS SATA power + data connector on it.

Plug the HDD onto that connector. Plus the USB port end to your current computer, and plug the round  barrel connector to a wall socket.
