i use the sm58 from quite far away though, and have to max out my rme (60db) to get decent volume.

Also that thing is unavailable.

It's a dynamic mic, designed to be used up close and avoid background noise, why would you use it from a distance??

If you just want more gain an inline preamp will do the job, Klark Teknik CT1 is the cheapest I know of at about $20, the link in my signature has some other options listed.

If you really want to buy a new mic for some reason, I can't promise it will fit your niche use case but Samson Q2U, Tbone MB88U and AT 2005 all have a similar design.

i can get a pulse MPRE for about the same price as that Klark and it does double the gain (50 dB iirc) reckon that will be a better bet if i decide to go just preamp route?

I'll check out the mics u mentioned thanks.

Your using the wrong microphone. Increasing the gain more and more is only going to bring trouble.

Your better off if in a quite environment switch to a condenser microphone since that wont mind sitting far away.
If its a loud environment maybe a shotgun style microphone.

I'm sure I questioned why you had a 58 previously but hey ho.

i mean it works fine, picks up my voice plenty loud from a meter away. There is nosie though but noise suppression takes care of that.

Someone is selling me a behringer mic 100 tube thing for £20 quid which can do 60dB of gain. Now i dont really need the tube, but it does 60db and is 20 quid so i might just go for it? What do you think?

Can try it I guess. Ive never used a preamp before as I pick the correct equipment for the situation. But if you got quite enough room that you can boost the gain that much sure but dont use speakers.

I promise you will have infinitely better results by just using the mic as it was designed, right next to your mouth.
