Moving GPU to Different Slot?

CheeseGod

My current gpu (3080) is in the x8 slot & my sound card is in the x16 slot, I had my pc built for me & was wondering if I swapped my gpu w my sound card, would I have to change any settings in my bios & would I get thermal performance issues or performance issues overall because I didn't have it in the x16 slot originally? I'm asking because I plan to clean the pc but I wanted to do this as well but I'm not sure if its even worth taking the risk.

My mb is a maximus x hero (wifi ac)

Set the graphics output to slot #0 or #1 (whatever's the first on the list) on your BIOS setup prior to moving the card.

Most BIOS automatically set the GPU output slot dynamically by just finding it, so you may not have to worry about if you just plug and play but it wouldn't hurt to just set and forget

As for thermals, you should be alright, just make sure to check your thermals and such after-the-fact and make sure, but the amount of PCIe lanes won't affect thermals directly. It won't hurt to move two things around unless you literally break something, the rest of it, you'll be okay, you will be better off with the 3080 in the 16x slot

Do you know if the performance is worth the difference to move the gpu to the 16x slot?  I've never had a gpu in my 16x, the only gpu I've had before this was my 1080ti but if it causes problems I'm just thinking about leaving it instead.

You're gonna have to see, but generally yes I can see the 1080ti being thirsty for all those lanes. Run FurMark before and after the slot switch to stress the GPU and see if the frames change at all. If they do, games will change too, so you should stick with the 16x slot. Otherwise, you can keep it in your 8x slot.
