I have never spent any more than $70 on a headset and I'm looking to upgrade to something better. I have been looking at the Astro a50's and a40's because i have a coupon for them, does anyone know if those are any good and if not can I have some recommendations my budget is anything under $300.

Most of us here would recommend you buy a quality headphone and a mic separately.

Buy something that actually has high quality audio and the get something like a modmic for a mic.

beyerdynamic and senhiser both make great headphones. Some of them will need a dac/amp or at least an amp. Go for the O2+ODAC or FiiO E10.

I will say straight away that a wireless "gaymin" headset is not the way to go. If you have that much cash to spend I recommend that you get good parts individually, the Headphones, Amp/Amp&DAC combo, and mic seperately. My recommendation for the money would be  a Fiio E10, DT 990's/HD 558/ATH AD-700X, and a Blue Snowflake or Modmic. Probably would be a better experience all around.

If you have a good coupon for the A40 and 50, I say why not get them. You definitely won't get the greatest quality compared to other headphone + microphone combos you can get, but you may be getting it cheaper. If you want to go for an external mic, try some DT 990s or HD558s with a Blue Yeti or something. Is there a certain type of sound you like? (more bass, mids, or treble)

If i were to get the AD 700X's with a mic right now i wouldnt be able to get Amp + Dac. would it be better to get the headphones first and would they still sound usable with basic on board equipment?

SInce the AD 700x's don't have a high impedence they can be powered easily by your onboard, I'd recommend it over the A40/A50 anyday of the week.

Like Mr Assassin said, you shouldn't need a DAC or amp. Also just wanted to point out that I have a 700X listed in the classified section. :)
