I was thinking since prices are sky high right now to do a HP Z230 conversion to gaming.   so either way looking to build my own or get barebones and convert.

barebones and convert will end up with a better overall system

 

you should be able to find a Dell workstation with E5-2670 or 2690 and add a 970 or 1060ti to it for under 500$

The best gaming PC is the PC you like to game on, how you like to game on it

Honestly not a good idea. You can get a i3 10100 system that will be better than a barebones z230 + upgrades

do you have a pc parts picker list that is good with i3.  i really like the amd side but price is key

You don’t have a dedicated GPU in that system, which will significantly damage gaming performance. Also, the 3400G for $250 is terrible, that’s scalper prices. The 10100 is currently the best CPU on the budget side since AMD has no stock of the 3100 and 3300X.
