I'm using an Intel DX79SR board and I have 4x8GB  Corsair Vengeance sticks. The current set up I have now is DIMMs (1,2 & 4,3). I'm only using 3 of the 8 slots, but I have all 4 sticks installed. I did some reading on the motherboard and slot 4 tends to go out quite often.

Could I switch DIMMs to (5,2 & 8,7)? Is it a simple change slots and power up kind of thing? Do I need to change anything in BIOS?

I want to identify if I have a faulty slot rather than a stick problem.

Hi buddy,

I'd start by ruling out if its the sticks. Just try each module in a single slot and see if it posts and reports the correct amount. If it does with each stick individually then its either a dodgy slot or it could be an issue with the memory controller. I had a quick look online but i couldn't see if 3rd Gen i7's have their memory controller 'on-die' on not. If they do, a faulty CPU pin or bad socket connection can cause a non-fatal issue like a stick of ram not showing up.

Just keep trying the single stick in different slots until your convinced its a bad slot. Also, I wouldn't worry about putting the sticks in whatever slot you want. The manual will probably give you an optimum layout for 2 or 4 or 8 sticks but doing it differently won't harm anything except performance as the stick configuration will be linked to whether the system is working in single, dual or quad channel.

Good Luck
