Hi everyone! I am currently compiling a list of parts for my next PC, and I plan for it to last me at least 5 years like the PC I am currently on.

[PCPartPicker Part List] (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/WGJZGq)

I won't be buying any parts any time soon, as I am waiting to see what Intel has to offer and there's nothing in stock, but this is my dream build and I have a few things I want to ask about.

  1. I plan to game at 1440p 144Hz pending a future monitor upgrade, and I am debating whether to get a 3070 or 3080. Would a 3070 be enough for this resolution/refresh rate combo, or would a 3080 be better suited. It's a dream PC so while money won't be an issue, saving where I can is still welcome.

  2. Are there better price/performance NVME drives than the 970 Evo? I'm looking for 1 TB of storage

  3. The 5900x is there because I would use the PC as my workstation as well (Inventor, 3D modeling, heavy programming, etc). I would go for the 5800x if it wasn't priced the way it is compared to the 5900x ($100 dollars less for 4c/8t less than the 5900x). These uses are also another case for the 3080 over the 3070, but I would like to hear your input.

  4. I'm an air cooling guy cuz I'm really paranoid about liquid cooling, so are there better air coolers (for a 5900x) than the Dark Rock 4 that aren't massive (i.e. Dark Rock Pro 4). From what I've seen this is an amazing cooler.

Thanks!

1. Depends on the games- most AAA games you'd probably be wanting a 3080

2. Yes, SN750

3. If you don't need the extra from the 5900x then don't worry about it. If you can use it, you probably won't think twice after hitting order on a 5900x.

4. Either that or D15. Wouldn't go anywhere else for a cooler

The answer to your hardware questions is:

It depends.

How long are you willing to wait? New tech toys are always slated to come out "soon" so the longer you wait, the more options you weill have...

...assuming it's in stock.

So, depending on how long you are willing to wait, a 3080 might be moot by the time you are ready to pull the trigger.

Waiting till the end of this year to build at the absolute max. This build shouldn't be "obsolete" by then, and if it was, it'll be much less expensive.

Everything will be different in 12 months, so whatever we answer now will probably be wrong. Come back with this question in October and we will revisit it.

The build looks good. I made some minor changes, namely SSD and RAM. The Pilot-E is TLC with DRAM cache like the 970 EVO, so will perform functionally identically. This RAM is 3600MHz vs the 3200MHz RAM that you chose, and will perform marginally better. The kit you chose would do fine, though.

5900x is way better than the 5800x IMO, the 100 dollar difference is really nothing when you factor in the other parts. It's like a 2000 vs 2100 dollar build for 50 percent more cores. NH-D15, Dark Rock Pro 4, Deepcool Assasin III, Thermalright Le Grand Macho RT are all great options for air cooling

Of course everything will fluctuate but I meant end of the year at the absolute max. if everything goes my away I see myself building this in the summer. I'm waiting to see Intel's response to AMD and the new NVIDIA stuff tomorrow, but I don't see myself needing a 3080ti (as much as I'd want one lol) or anything else above a 3080.

went for 3200 MHz as I'm not really that nitpicky over a handful of FPS that I can gain by turning down some settings I usually turn down when I game (stuff like depth of field, motion blur, etc.). If there's differences beyond just that between the 2 speeds then let me know for sure!
