i would recommend for you just to stay with your DT 990s or go for the Sennheiser HD 600 or the HD 650 if you could strech your budget if you want

everyone says that you need to get hifiman He- 400 or sennheiser hd 650 althought the he 400 will sound better if youre not willing to spend another 400 on amp and dac.

also he 400 are said to have one of the best bass responces all the way to 600$.

Hey I also own DT990 and after some research I've concluded that its hard to get a clear vertical upgrade from a DT990 (similar sound signature) unless you spend a lot of money. With this in mind, I'm looking for a different experience with my next purchase. So far I'm really leaning toward hifiman he400 but this will be a complete opposite in signature sound. If you really love the sound signature of dt990 I think senheiser hd650 might be a good middle ground.

If I had $400 to spend on headphones I'd probably get the Sennheiser HD 600s, but I can't say how big an improvement (if any) there'll be to the DT990s.

i have not tried dt990 but i can tell that the hifimans feel like an aura of smooth sounds around you and have this crisp upper range that brings out some nice details in drums and acoustic guitars.

Is there any difference between these and the regular M50s (besides removable cable and color) that makes it $100 more expensive?

I don't believe there really is an upgrade for that price.

If you're looking for something more bassy but similar to the 990's then why not consider the 770's? Being closed cans they should provide more bass.

Or perhaps some Grado's would do the trick, https://www.mayflowerelectronics.com/shop/headphones/grado-sr325i/ seem pretty coo', anyone know from experience?

In my country, online stores carry the HE400 around the same price as the DT880 (actually the HE400 is around $50 cheaper), and you say that the HE400 would be an upgrade to DT990? If that's true, the HE400 might be my next upgrade then....

Yes because he400 is a orthodynamic headphone but to get the price down they skimped on build quality so it's not as durable as the beyers. H264 has a good review on them. You can find the link in the faqs

Maybe wait until you can afford the HE-500s if you want a decent jump in quality.

that would be jumping into the 700$ price range and that opens up a whole ton of new options.

I mean jumping from Beyers DT line is always very hard. Diminishing returns is really bad here. You gotta put in some serious dough if you want a sizeable improvement. HE400s would be a small jump but to get higher than that it'll cost a lot.
