whilst on paper 4c/8t to 8c/16t seems easy decision especially with discounts on ebay but i dont have any non gaming workloads and am just wondering from purely a gaming view would it be worth it to upgrades i feel the 6700k is bottlenecking my 3070 :( help plzz online comparisons are confusing

Look at benchmarks for the types of games/software you use.

Some games will utilize more c/t than others. Higher IPC would help but it could be negligible

Upgrading would be good, but you would be better off with a Ryzen 5 5600X instead of a Ryzen 7 3700X.

yeah i get you, i have limited budget and i can get like 20% off in the uk on ebay brand new right now for the 3700x, so thats why i am looking in that direction, thanks though dude :)

If you can get a decent motherboard and the 3700X within your budget, go for it.

PLEASE STOP [Killing] ME I WILL GIVE Y OU ANOTHER DEAL.

Eh, honestly I wouldn't bother

Going up to something like a 5600x or 10700/10900 would be the option I would go for, not a 3700x. The performance upgrade in your situation wouldn't be apparent enough

6700K is still pretty strong. Has higher IPC than 3700X I believe.. could be mistaken. And you could oc that 6700K much further (and easier) than a 3700X. Unless your board doesn't have much in the way of connectivity (nvme) I would run watcha brung and save your cash for a solid upgrade. I went from a 3770K to a 3600XT.. wasn't a mind blowing upgrade, but its still pretty decent. I wanted a 5600X.. couldn't get one.

appreciate the info bud i will probs hold off then, the price was great but if it wasnt all that much of an uplift i will just wait as 6700k is still banging tbh i just had some spare cash so i will save it for 5000 series

6700k with a decent OC (4.5-4.7ghz) will be a sidegrade changing to a 3700x. Won't really be any better in gaming outside of some games. With a 3070, it won't be that apparent.

I would go for a larger upgrade that actually is improved across the board. 5600x or 5800x.

That's what I would do. I am kicking myself a little for getting my XT. I was impatient, and I told myself I could always get a hundred dollar board for this XT, pull half of my ram and my kid has a new pc to use when he is ready for one of his own. My justification knows no bounds once I'm in the right mindset :D

I ran my 3770K @ 4700mhz, still a good cpu.. just not as strong as she used to be.

With an RTX 3080. Look at the i3-10100 (similar to your 6700k). Your results will be similar, if not better. Keep in mind, a 3070 will be much more GPU limited than the 3080.

The 3800x might be a bit smoother, but it won't give you really any absolute gains that are worth mentioning.

5600x/5800x will.

When you change to amd from Intel Remeber to get a new motherboard too so your cpu sits in correctly with no damage to either parts just a heads up tbh

You're getting a 20 fps gain in minimums and 17 fps in average going from a 7700k to a 3700x in this Cyberpunk benchmark in a cpu heavy area, so it would undoubtably be a significant upgrade.

https://gamegpu.com/action-/-fps-/-tps/cyberpunk-2077-test-gpu-cpu

If you're targeting 60 fps though I probably wouldn't bother with upgrading to anything else right now even if the cpu market wasn't garbage, as there isn't a lot of difference between 6700k and 7700k is there? And you'd be nearly locked to 60 fps in the most cpu heavy game on the market according to that benchmark if so.
