Hi i just Got a i9 9900k and when i start up a game like lol or cod. It goes from 4.8 GHz to 3.6 GHz. And when i look at Intel Extreme it says that it’s power limit throtling. An Then i put the limit 2 unlimitet and Then alls good but as soon as i start up another game or restart the one i was in. It the same Thing. but when i Play bfv or starwars fallen order theres no problem at all

You need to change PL1 but that is also a safety concern because 9900k is a power monster and that board is crap relative to that power draw (250w easy, depending on your cooling for the CPU). I hope Gigabyte has implemented overtemperature shutdown feature.

I'm having this same exact problem! I can't figure it out and have tried everything!

Would you recommend changing the PL1 with my specs?

this shouldnt be happening if you do that throught the BIOS

Use ThrottleStop to Lock your turbo power limits. Intel XTU does not have access to the Lock option.

Get rid of any Gigabyte CPU control software running on your computer.

Do I need to do this each time I boot up my computer?

Maybe. If your BIOS is not setting the turbo power limits correctly or if you have some software or a game that is interfering with the turbo power limits then yes, you will need to lock the turbo power limit register each time your computer starts or resumes to prevent this from happening.

You have excellent cooling. Your CPU can run faster and more consistently when the power limits are set appropriately. The default 95W TDP limit will prevent your CPU from reaching its full potential. It is a farce compared to the amount of power that these CPUs really need.

He adjusted the power limits in the BIOS but this problem is still happening.

@Precision_03 was able to solve this problem by using ThrottleStop to set the Lock option on the turbo power limits register. There is no option available in the BIOS to lock this register. Intel XTU does not have this option either. His 9900K now runs at a consistent 4.8 GHz while gaming instead of 3.6 GHz.

There is either a problem with the BIOS or the game he is playing is changing the turbo power limits when it should not be touching them.

That's not what he stated (or rather, he's being unclear here tho XTU was mentioned)

Either he PMed you or you're just making more guesses.

We have been discussing this more on this forum. There are photos and videos of the problem and my bios and ThrottleStop settings over there. https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/i9-9900k-wont-go-above-3-6ghz-while-gaming.276698/
