Help with new Frankenstein

Go to solution Solved by MeatySoup42,

Good Luck! Watch out for those sneaky proprietary connectors.

Hey mate, I'm looking to upgrde my Dell opti7010 sff. I am looking to get a new case (I believe it has atx size motherboard). I as well am looking to add a 500w PSU and 2 sticks of ddr3 (2x8gb) and topping it off with an upgrade from the gt710 to the gtx1650 super. I wanted to know if this is all possible to do and if you have any suggestions. Cheers!

-> Moved to Laptops and Pre-Built Systems

What CPU it has? Mobo looks like it has standard mounting for CPU cooler, screw holes and PSU connections. Fan connectors are Dell proprietary. But CPU dictates how much you could go with it.

sI have a similar PC actually so I could help. I have a optiplex 9020 (i7-4790, 32 gb ram, gtx 1650, 2tb of ssd storage ). I upgraded the ram from 16-32, the storage from hdd to ssd and the gpu from 750ti to 1650.

Swapping out the case would be hard. Dell uses a lot of proprietary connectors for front USB, audio etc. Modding the case like improving airflow would be easier.

Same goes for the psu. Dell is notorious at using proprietary power connectors and if you mess up the power supply..... BOOM...... there goes your PC.

If you are confident enough to the research, maybe even do some soldering to fix the proprietary connectors. Go For it!

My recommendation from my experience would be different. Looking at the spec sheet https://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/optix/en/optiplex_7010_technical_guidebook.pdf the sff model has a 240w power supply. This would be not enough for gtx 1650. (My similar system barely scrapes the requirments) A gt 1030 would be a better fit. It's still decent for 1080p60fps gaming.

Office PC prebuilts like mine and yours are designed to hinder upgrades so the non-tech savy just buy a whole new PC. For your prebuilt, the best upgrade path might be a underwhelming but capable gt 1030. Make sure you get the gddr5 version over the gddr4 version if you do take my advice. It goes for about £60-70 pounds in the uk.

As for ram, if you already have 8gb of ram, that will probably be enough for that tier of system,

Hope this helps and happy gaming!

Thanks mate! Definitely help full, I know I'll need to upgrade the PSU and the Dell I have has the 24 pin connector so I believe I should be good on that, as far as new case I think the mobo for the 7010 sff is a Matx but wasn't sure if the mounting points were off or custom to dells case layout. I have seen quite a few videos of people putting old dells into new cases and new psu. This system has always been my test pc to just do random upgraded to practice with.

Its hard to change the case/psu and an unnecessary expense. I have done similar stuff in the past.

You can try to fit a 1050 or 1060 by removing the optical drive and installing an SSD which will also cut down on power draw.

You can power the 1060 from an adapter connected to the power of the optical drive. Using a more powerful GPU will make things harder so a 1060 in the limit here.
