Yesterday, while I was browsing on my computer, suddenly the cpu or gpu fans, i couldn't tell, ramped up to full speed. Shortly afterwards I lost picture and my screen went black, I pressed the resetbutton which shut it down, but It did not turn back on afterwards. I figured out if I remove my graphics card, then everything works fine. Is my gpu dead, and is there anything I can do to fix this? I know that putting the card in an oven to re-solder it, but what should I try first?

Specs are as follow:

i7-4770

32gb 1600mhz

gtx 1070

thermaltake smart  500w

Have you got another pc you could plug the graphics card into to see if it'll boot?

Well you have a bad psu so not too big of a surprise if that would be the issue.

Well, ive used the computer for months fine. I just tested my card in my sisters computer, same thing. Wouldn't boot

I tested it out in a separate computer, same issue. Wouldn't turn on, took my 1070 out, put the 1650 that was in it back in, and the computer worked perfectly.

Normal for bad psu's they either fail or take something with them. If your 1070 does not work in another computer it is most likely no longer working

Yeah i figured the card is a good as dead, unless I can put it in the oven and fix it. Once I take out the gpu, then everything else works fine, should I still worry that my power supply failed?

I would replace it regardless when you get a new psu as the smart series is not a safe to use psu. Here is a tier list and just don't go below b tier units

I do understand the risk, but i have to say its quite disappointing if my power supply choice is what killed the card.

It's know to deliver unstable power so yeah. The psu is the biggest pc hardware killer. Which is obvious as well it's supposed to deliver clean and correct power and when it cannot do that hardware suffers. It is also supposed to protect your system from outside electrical issues and if it doesn't have the protections for that it simply won't do that and just let it kill the system and itself.

Yeah. I thought I would be able to get away with it. But after my card died now i'm worried about the rest of my computer.

Just like many others you fell for the cheap psu's. I mean it is attractive a cheap 500w unit that doesn't look bad from the outside but very much so is not good. If the system works without the gpu then it's probably just the gpu that died.

Sucks that this is how you learn the lesson of never cheap out on a psu.

I mean, I knew the dangers. But marketing did play a less knowledgeable me back when I first built my computer

I'm surprised too, under load it shouldn't have drawn over 400w. So I dont know why my 500w power supply would have been so stressed. Though i suppose they do degrade, but its hard to imagine it degrading that much.

Oh no it has nothing to do with degrading. That psu is just shit in terms of everything. It has poor power filtering thus allowing dirtier power through which components do not like. That and it cannot reach 500w without becoming wildly unstable/shutting off

Yeah, right now because the only thing in it is the processor, i'm going to keep the psu for normal use. But i'm going to try and find something better before replacing my card.
