I torrent TV shows and movies. I hate using physical media for movies, and often find that the quality on the google play store isnt very good.

For TV it is just a matter of availibility in a good quality format.

What do you mean by that? Does it have something to do with seeding, or whatever it's called? I'm genuinely curious

My understanding is that Canadian law protects the downloader, so long as they don't participate in uploading the same file they're downloading. It's the production that's illegal, not the consumption.

It's common courtesy to have a 1:1 ratio of seeding and downloading. (and if you're nice, a 1.5:1 to keep the torrent alive). But to cut on bandwidth usage, some stop seeding as soon as the torrent is done.

Oh, I see. Doesn't that mean people in Canada could torrent all they want without any legal worries?

So seeding is pretty much reuploading the file?

In the UK both are illegal. However, it's a civil matter if you are just downloading copyrighted material, as in, you could be sued in a civil court. Whereas, if you are distributing copyrighted material then it can be classed as a criminal act, and potentially you could face being arrested, and tried by a criminal court, with penalties of large fines and possible jail sentences.

Whether 'seeding' a torrent is akin to 'distribution' under the law is very much up for debate. The copyright laws were created long before torrenting was a thing. The only arrests I'm aware of in the UK with regards to distribution are the original uploaders of the copyrighted material, and not just random people seeding, I think this is partly down to how difficult it is to prosecute a person, when all you have is an IP address.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that, but essentially that's what it boils down to.  Keep in mind, i'm no lawyer, and it's possible i'm wrong.

And as the guy above me said, it can still be pursued through the civil courts, I can't think of a single case of it happening in Canada though.

I only torrent games when I don't know if I will enjoy them. Perfect example Thief. I torrented it, played an hour, didn't like it, deleted it. I also Torrented Borderlands 2. Loved it, bought it, had fun. I also download movies, but I only download movies that I have already bought on DVD or any other form of media and I would just like to watch them at good quality without streaming. I believe that if I already bought the content then I should be able to have that content available on multiple platforms.
