Advantages?

If you need them for specific tasks then there's no real problem with having multiple GPUs in your system, but if you don't have a real need for one then you'll just be adding more heat, using more power and spending more money.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

You could use them as a display adapter. So if you're out of ports on your main GPU, you can throw something like a 710 in your system and be able to connect more displays.

Some productivity workloads can use multiple GPUs, this is pretty niche and if you don't know if you can use them then you probably can't.

Just now, linuxfur said:

SLI and Crossfire are absolutely dead and games usually do not support utilizing multiple GPUs, or are really buggy and not worth the effort. Just adds more unnecessary power usage.

If you do computational tasks like BOINC or Folding@Home, then yes they can be very useful. Otherwise, don't even bother.

I did hear about a recent NVIDIA project that can utilize multiple GPUs for something but I can't find it anymore.

and two 3090s is literally 1000w LMAO

Just wait, going for wifi 6, 4K 144hz where two systems are rendering each half combined into the queue of G-sync for all those frames.

wait that is not possible, *nukes everything*

Thanks everyone.

So chances are that the one GPU will be good enough for a couple different displays running a game and a couple other processes in the background, then?

Yes. Unless you're doing something specific that needs multiple GPUs you'll be fine with one.

What is the difference in reference to my CPU? (Ryzen 5950x) Would it bog down my CPU with extra information? Multiple monitors at 4k?

Thank you for taking time to respond
