No Sound from Headset

why is sound such a STRUGGLE, every headset i get i spend 2 hours fidgeting with the settings, updating drivers watching YouTube tutorials to get it working for it to stop working 1-2 days later i plug one headset in, works fine plug another in and i experience a variety of issues why can't i just plug it in, turn the volume up flip the mic down and it work like its suppose too? any helpful tips will do.
