What are some good iPod alternatives?

I want to buy a music player but if possible I'd like to avoid spending as much money as I would for a iPod 128GB. I don't think 32GB is acceptable, unless the storage is expandable

Well, most of them are crap compared to any smartphone on the market these days. If you like the iPhone and it's integration into the Appel landscape, getting a used iPhone will do the trick.

An old iPhone or Android phone works well as a music player IMO. I've got a spare Samsung Galaxy S9 (yeah, it's not that old, but it has a broken screen and isn't in use anymore as a phone) that gets lots of use as a media device. It also supports microSD cards, so I can add more storage.

If you want just an audio player, my choice would be the Walkman A50. Only 16 GB of on board storage, but has micro SD.  But like everyone else pointed out, your best bet is probably picking up a refurbed first generation iPhone SE.
