Custom Build w/ Windows 10 "Crash" - Can Still Interact w/ Windows

CaseySean01

Hello everyone, thank you in advance for any suggestions/recommendations!

I have a custom-built computer, and lately have been experiencing a weird freezing issue that typically happens randomly. Sometimes it will happen twice in a day, sometimes once a week. The computer begins to lock up (if I'm watching YouTube the video will begin skipping), I can still interact with the computer (move mouse, move windows around, type in fields), but anything in the taskbar will be frozen. Attempting to close windows or restart the computer does nothing. The start menu can be opened, but clicking on restart does nothing and changes the cursor to a loading cursor. The only way to clear this is to hard reset it by holding the power button. I had a call on Teams with a coworker and my computer crashed, I could hear him still speaking, but he could not hear me.

EventViewer shows nothing but DCOM warnings up until the "crash".

Seems to only have been an issue in the past few months with recent Windows updates.

Here are the things I've tried...

- Complete clean re-install of Windows 10 Professional 64-Bit.

- Checked Event Viewer leading up to the crash only some DCOM warnings and RPC Events.

- Used 'WhoCrashed' program to analyze crash dumps, apparently not crash dumps are available.

- Swapped M.2 SSDs in between installs to rule out issues with SSD.

- Run sfc /scannow, found integrity violations before and after reinstall, did not fix freezing issue.

- Complete memory diagnostics using MemTest86, no errors found.

- Turned off hardware acceleration in Google Chrome.

- BIOS up to date.

- M.2 SSDs firmware up to date.

- Followed guide at below link by SirMoloth

Having the same problem.

I suspect it's either the RAM or Windows itself idk really.

RAM: Because I have an OC on it, though nothing crazy and I had no errors in testing the ram stability.

Windows: idk , just a hunch. It's windows after all.

Only happening when I do really unintensive tasks, like youtube and running indy games (rpgm , flash, etc)

I attached some pictures which show my "crash" and a overview of how my idle looks like in Task manager

EDIT: Things to add.

This is basically a fresh install of Windows since I swapped CPU in mid November.

BIOS update had no effect on the issue.

I have a video of this "crash" happening, if you're interested in seeing it to compare. Let me know... Still have yet to figure out the issue and at this point have tried absolutely everything other than replacing RAM.

alright.

Tested memory speeds.

STOCK (no xmp, nothing)                  ---> Windows crash

A-XMP: 4400MHz CL19 FCLK@Auto ---> Windows crash

My OC: 3800MHz CL18 FCLK@1:1   ---> Windows crash

I'll try removing one Stick and then swapping, to see if a bad RAM stick is the problem.

You know I find it very weird that we both have fairly different builds, but are experiencing an identical "crash". I've never had this issue with any computer I've ever had. So strange... I'm running without XMP and haven't had a crash but based on the fact that you have, I doubt it'll fix the issue with mine. I'm beginning to wonder if it's CPU or motherboard related. It's definitely not Windows as I've changed my SSD and reinstalled the OS.

Another thought I might have is maybe it's an issue with one of the tens of installed software to control LEDs that might have a memory leak... Any thoughts?

@Drachenmaetzler Can you take a look at this video and see if it's similar to the crash you are having?

Yeah, idk. I have deinstalled any lighting software, but it's still crashing.

My crash is very similar to what your video is showing.

I have yet to try removing and changing the RAM sticks.

The annoying thing is that it's not really reproducable and very sporadic encountering the crash. (sometimes like 30mins , up to multiple hours of use)

Could you tell me what Motherboard and Ram you're using?

Yes, exactly. It can sometimes not happen for up to 2 days, sometimes it happens after 30 minutes powering on the computer.

Absolutely, I'm running an ASUS X570 Gaming Plus (Wi-Fi) with a Ryzen 5 3600X running at stock clocks, RAM is Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB, stock settings is apparently 2133MHz, but XMP is 3000. Removed the the XMP and I haven't had a crash yet but *knock on wood* it's gonna happen again.

After not experiencing the crash for about 5 days, it happened again shortly after updating Windows 10. RAM is running stock clocks 2133MHz.

I am now fully stumped as to what could be the reason.

Issue is now solved for me. Update to NVIDIA's newest drivers, they released a TDR fix.
