What Is The Problem?

My computer locks up every time I try to download things when it gets to a certain bandwidth. This seems to be around 18mb/s according to Steam's little graph. Throttling the bandwidth on Steam makes it so it doesn't happen anymore, but launchers don't really throttle so I lock up when launches start to download updates.

What Have I Tried?

I have installed the specific drivers for the hard drive from the manufacture. I have installed LAN drivers from Aorus. I have downloaded Crystal Disk Info, which gave a 100% Good. Windows Memory diagnostic tool said my RAM was all good. Crystal Disk Mark which I downloaded on accident and ran didn't crash it which is weird.

Error Messages?

I can't find any. It's why I'm saying it's a lock up and not a crash. I'm not getting a blue screen or anything, it just becomes unresponsive and I have to force restart.

System Specs?

  • Windows 10 20H2 64bit
  • AMD Ryzen 9 3900x
  • 32gbs Ram (4 8gb sticks (Corsair Vengance))
  • Sapphire Pulse AMD Radeon 5700xt
  • x570 Aorus Elite (Default Drivers)
  • Samsung SSD 970 EVO 1Tb
  • Corsair RM850x (850 Watt)
  • Built Myself Might be worth mentioning

First Forum post ever so if I forgot anything, need any more info, or need to change anything just let me know. I've tried everything I can think of on my own, the only thing left is patience and help.

Thank you for your detailed message. Do you have a Wi-Fi USB dongle? Try to use one instead of your ethernet connection and give us the results. Also did you try downloading from a torrent or a big file like some Linux .iso from your browser?

Unfortunately I don't have a Wifi dongle and my isp thinks all torrents are piracy regardless of context. But I did try downloading Pyre from Itch.io. Task manager read a peak of 156mb/s on ethernet and I didn't experience any of the issues I usually get. Pyre is only 7Gbs, but I had an issue downloading Hades which is "close" at 12Gbs. Downloading the Ubuntu iso also yielded no issue and had a similar download speed, well according to task manager at least.

These where downloaded through Chrome.

I think it's also worth stressing that I don't have an issue with only steam, that's just the only one I was able to bandage. I tried to download an update from the MTG Arena launcher and that Locked up my PC.

Can you please try Epic Games Launcher which has a lot of free games to download from. Since you don't experience any download issues from your browser let's check what is happening with various game launchers.

Not sure what's going on. I can't seem to replicate the problem all of a sudden. There was a windows Defender update recently if that could explain anything. I downloaded Watchdogs 2 from Epic and was fine. I tried MTG Arena, which gave me a lot of issues less than a week ago and it downloaded just fine.... The only thing I noticed was giant peaks and dips on the ethernet tab in task manager.

This is some hard observer effect. I guess since i can't duplicate the problem anymore I'll mark it as solved?

Thank you so much though for trying to help me.

You're welcome and I'm glad that you're not experiencing those issues anymore. Just try it some more days before marking it as solved, no need to rush.
