So... ... ... here we are

hi everyone,

  • This post will cover me renting an inexpensive server with KVM.
  • What my abilities are and how I use it
  • Answer the question, will it replace my PC.

Lets get into it.

Right OldSock you fart why did you rent what is basically a useless rig?

Well lets start with the server, It has 8Gb of ram 2Cores and 20Gb hard drive space. BUT it also have unlimited bandwidth.

LOL OldSock that is hardly even a server!

You will be right, from a pure specs standpoint it is hardly a server. Fact is it can barely do what I need it to do BUT it also have unlimited bandwidth.

So I log into it, Install my OS of choice "i will not disclose" and my tools of choice "i will not disclose"

Once i got everything setup and my custom scripts fired up, that simple server with its unlimited bandwidth can do what I will simply call "work" and it will do so without downtime, without me having to worry about it physically. I can get access to it from any of my devices like phone, tablet and laptop so now I can do work at any location with no problem at all.

So I can now scale up or scale down, I can be on 24/7 and be in control as long as I have "a internet access point" it doesn't even have to be a good one. Once done with the work I simply push it to online storage and download a backup. This way I am able to do a lot with very little and that is the point to this post.

Many companies want to sell us a lot of services but in the end some of us simply don't need a lot to do what we need to do. That I feel gets overlooked in today's world.

Thus if you are thinking about a setup like this I say go for it. Yes there will be some situations that you need to address. Yes it is a PAIN to get use to BUT it for the most part it works. Actually it work really well if you find a good provider.

My conclusion is this,

If you need basic computing done and you need uptime, bandwidth... Do some research figure stuff out test it on a VM make sure you know what your goal is and understand what is needed. Then you will find a really cool solution.

If you are a computer "user" that needs a solution like this, I hope you will find a great solution like I did.

enjoy

i really feel like this post would be more valuable if we actually knew what you were doing with it. Hosting DNS for example is a much different task than a rendering or game streaming server (the system you describe could reasonably do one but not the other). We can't really make claims about whether this is feasible for us not knowing with what workloads it was feasible for you.
