Games are stuttering with new rx 6800

Nastynas236

Hi there,

I just got a rx 6800 last week and with most games I'm getting high fps, though stuttering like crazy. I've used DDU multiple times and reinstalled the drivers, and sometimes the stuttering will disappear, then the next day reappear.

Honestly don't know what is causing it. I had issues with AMD drivers last I had a Radeon card, though I thought there drivers would be fixed five years later...

Rest of system specs are:

i9-9900k

Z390

16gb ram
Corsair rmx650 watt power supply

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers in advance

can you record a 60fps/120fps video of these stuttering with your phone?

What monitor?  If you have a 60hz panel you are going to have alot of screen tearing.

Do you have a different cable you can try from the GPU to monitor to rule out cable/cable seating (since its happening intermittently - tough to pinpoint issue when its that way lol)

The card isn't overclocked. It's most games, funnily enough cyberpunk is running great, yet League of legends and Battlefield games are stuttering like crazy. Warzone works fine sometimes, then other times it stutters.

Hmm I don't, though I can try switching cables with my other monitor? which is another 165hz monitor.

I'll wait until you post a video and see what kind of stuttering it is. Like I mentioned, I don't think that it could be the drivers as recently AMD has seemed to have more stable drivers.

Yep I will post a video when I can. Also may I ask what your Radeon settings are? do you have things like anti-lag enabled? Or FreeSync?

My card is overclocked: 2100 Mhz memory, power limit +15%, core frequency 2400-2500 MHz.

I tend to turn all those 'extra' features off such as antilag, etc. If I were you, I would try that first. It could be that some games don't work well with those switched on.

Do you have a Freesync monitor with Freesync enabled in settings?

After I upgraded to the RX 6800 I experienced some issues too. Running a game would start off well, but sometimes Alt-tabbing out and back would cause the refresh rate to go crazy. The monitor's OSD would show it dropping to around half the monitor's refresh ( from 165 to ~ 85 ) and then bounce back up. The experience after this starts is unpleasant and feels like it's running at 60 hz coupled with brightness flickering on the monitor. I believe it has something to do with Freesync.

As with you, reinstalling drivers using DDU helped, but it just comes back.

You need more ram, once you go 1440p or multi monitors. So add another 16Gb, you will be like why didn't I do this before.

Pfft, more ram makes a better user experience. What some your tuber told you that 16Gb is the sweet spot?? A benchmark on a test bench does not apply to you!

Agree with you, OP has 16GB of RAM, it should more than suffice for any game.

I have three rigs, all with 16GB of RAM each, I've not encountered any game where it needs more than 16GB. My main rig has an X570 mobo + R9 3900X + 2x Patriot Viper RGB 8GB DDR4 3600CL17 + Sapphire Nitro+ RX 6900 XT and don't have any issue with any game, so having 'just' 16GB of system RAM isn't the OP's issue.

...Are you thinking of VRAM? Sure, running out of VRAM could cause these sorts of issues but at 1440p with a 6800 there's no way they're using all of their VRAM.

If you mean just regular system memory, that has nothing to do with it. Not a single game out there, unless maybe you're running Minecraft with 200 mods, uses that much system memory. I'm running two monitors with the main being 4k120, and even playing the most demanding games at ultra with video streaming on the second monitor and discord up doesn't even get over 10gb. RAM has nothing to do with this.

No, I am talking about user experience and RAM has a lot to do with it! So tell me what happens when a pc runs out of ram? You don't know nor do I if OP's pc is uploading to the cloud, windows updating, facebook messenger , streaming, you tube videos playing, etc. etc. If someone has a second monitor they are going to use it.

So instead of quoting me with a response about something like some single threaded application doesn't benefit from more.... Help the OP out.

BTW OP your build is out of balance. 9900k, RX6800 and only 16Gb of ram.

Do you have multiple monitors? If yes, try reinstalling video drivers with one monitor connected. Also what is your memory speed? Maybe try resetting or updating bios.

not trying to revive thread.. but i have 6800 xt / 5800x X570 and 32GB (16GBx2) 3600 CL16 19 19 19 39 (Gskill Neo 3600) and i run out of Memory while gaming? causing stuttering!! I disable my page file tho cuz i only use NVMe SSDs on Gen4 (Saberent Rocket 4.0 Plus(OR Rocket 4.1 as i callem) 2TB (NEW VERSION) 2TB 7GB/s reads/ 6400MB/s Writes and a 1TB OLDER VERSION 5000 READS/4000Writes (BOOT) and that it do not want page file constantly writing to my SSDs as these are/were expensive and low stock at time i bought my Saberent Rocket 4.1 +  and iv had an NVMe gen3.0 pci-e x4 drive crap out on me cuz of excessive Page file Writes?// this can cause stuttering issues too??? check ur game/OS storage disks? run windows10 defrag tool (DO NOT  DEFRAG SSDs) but do the "OPTIMIZE" Function or TRIM for the SSDs ur using or defrag ur HDDS, if no ssd, upgrade to a gen3 (Pioneer 1TB Gen3 NVMe m.2 pci-e ssd if applicable $115USD (Amazon link here) can make a big difference in games if making the nvme a GAMES ONLY DRIVE (WHICH IS WHAT I ALWAYS DO NOW.

      **************************** https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07P5QFRP2/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1?smid=A1SNQ8NRBE1IGO&psc=1 ****************************

this way if OS gets messed up by corruption or virus, I fix boot drive, then i can just install windws and just click my game launchers(usually) that are still on my Game drive (NVMe) and it will fix the registry or do what it needs, you will need to verify and or locate games files(like with uplay/Ubi Connect) and games arae re-installed faster than re-downloading them completely, and can save ALOT OF TIME THIS WAY, to get back in the game!!

check ur

CPU /

RESEAT RAM

"OPTIMIZE" or Defrag DRIVES

Check drive Slots (M.2) or power/data cables (SATA OR(M.2 SATA) (AKA RESEAT M.2 SSDS) )if have a Samsung NVMe, Install Samsung NVMe Drivers, Even if u dont have a Samsung NVMe, any NVMe M.2 SSD Will work with the Samsung NVMe Driver, Its way better than the MS Driver that comes in Windows 10 X64 bit!!  its VIRUS FREE, U can scan it if u want! Trust me, trying t help where i can!

NVMe Driver.rar

Sammy NVMe driver will work, you have to manually install,   (DIDNT TAKE MY COMMENT IN ARCHIVE SO HAVE TO UPDATE NVMe DRIVER MANUALLY and SEARCH wher u extract the driver in install the inf file by right clicking>Install>    then device Manager> Standard NVMe Controller>(DEVICE )update Driver> Pick from List> find Samsung Electronics Co.,LTD> Select ("Samsung NVMe Controller") under right window here click OK/install/ or update!

U may need to restart PC!... to verify, back to device Manager> "Storage Controllers"> Samsung NVMe Controller should show on teh NVMe Controller u updated!!! Do this for each NVMe M.2 SSD In the PC!!!   Enjoy!!!! it makes a Big Difference! If it doesn't for you? IDK!  But this works for me and something i dont see many people talk about or even know about this (that i know of anyway)

I use sammy nvme driver in win10x64 on my Saberent Rocket 4 Plus 2TB NVme m.2 Gen4 and it runs 20-40% better and more optimal than the MS Driver( It replacing the NVMe Controller Driver Not the Drives (Driver) itself!

At this point, I would go the nuclear option and reformat your computer, start fresh with new re-installs.

In my experience, this is usually the most thorough fix, generally doesn't take more than an hour or two if you're organized.

I have the same problem with my rx 6900 xt.

Games like R6 Siege, Hunt: Showdown and Kingdom Come: Deliverance are showing more than 100 fps all the time but it felt like less than 40.

I accidentally was able to fix it by enabling "Virtual Super Resolution" and setting in game resolution more than 1440p (my monitor's maximum).

Try to open amd gpu driver and go through menus: Gaming, Games, Global Display.

In Global Display you can find "Virtual Super Resolution".

Once you enable it, you'll be able to set in game resolution above its maximum, which also could cause some weird problems but most of them can be fixed by restarting the game.
Suprisingly it made my games very smooth and look better.

I hope it will help you.
