Hello All,

I'm currently running a i7920@3.8, on an Asus P6TSE. (Usually have HT disabled). And a HD5850, (moderate OC).

I'm almost exclusively gaming, (FPS, RTS, etc), at 1080p.

My question is, what do you think my upgrade options are, if any? Is this CPU lacking sufficient grunt to justify a whole new platform purchase, or would the money be better spent on a new videocard?

A little additional info: I'm saving a chunk of space on my SSD for when, (IF!!), GTAV arrives on PC, so do you think my current rig will handle it ok?

Any and all comments welcome.

Thanks chaps.

If you have to choose which to upgrade, get a new GPU. That old thing can't play anything modern anymore, and the cpu will last at most, another year before it's a bottleneck. I doubt GTA V will ever be released on PC.

No, you're fine, but i'm not sure how much does overclocking affect perf. on that chip but if it's like ivy than there's no card your cpu will bottleneck in any game. And if you're buying a card in the future and worried about your cpu than definitely look for a card wiith support for DX 12. Or whatever the new standard is.

new gpu and maybe a better cooler to squeeze a little more performance out of the 920.

List what games you play really.. You should be knowing first whats limiting the gpu or the cpu. To find this out its kinda simple; the gpu load below 99% is a cpu bottleneck & gpu at 99% is a gpu bottleneck thats when you decide if youre happy with your frames or not.

  • 5 weeks later...

Sorry for the late reply, terribly bad manners, i know...

Right now I mostly play Skyrim, heavy modded, but I dont have the GPU horsepower to run a good ENB.

Im looking at maybe the GTX 770.

Is there ever really a need for more than 2GB GPU memory? Is there ever a benefit to more when running a single 1080p display?
