cpu upgrade

Hi i have a A320M-S2H motherboard and a ryzen 3 2200g, I want to upgrade to a ryzen 5 2400g, will I need to pre flash/update my motherboard bois to do so, or will it work out of the box?

It will work out the box. Just out of curiousity, why are you "upgrading" to a 2400g?

only difference between an r3 2200g and a r5 2400g is that the 2400g runs only .2ghz faster, only big difference is one has hyper threading while one doesnt

A "real" upgrade would be getting a 3400G, but it'll depend on pricing and availability. I'd suggest rather not getting the 2400G in the first place since you're using a GPU to begin with. There won't be too much of a performance improvement.

what is the availability of a used Ryzen 5 2600 to you? (or 12nm 1600, the 1600 "AF")

 

the 2200G, 2400G, and 2600 are all second gen CPUs and will run on the same BIOS versions. However, the 2600 uses faster architecture than the 2200G and 2400G.

A 1600 AF is a solid choice, though I'm seeing some different price on pcpartpicker.com

3100 would provide a similar experience so it's an option to consider. it would require a BIOS update though.

The ryzen 5 1600 12nm, also known by its nickname the "1600 AF," uses the 12nm Zen+ architecture, as opposed to the Ryzen 5 1600 14nm, using the first gen 14nm Zen architecture. Because of this, it very closely resembles the ryzen 5 2600, simply with a slightly lower clock speed. It follows the same rules for BIOS compatibility.

 

The name "AF" comes from the product code using the letters AF as an identifier instead of AE, though the rest of the product code is identical. If you're looking at an "AFBOX" model instead of an "AEBOX" model, that's the faster processor.

Thanks for this stuff. just for my dumb brain the ryzen5 1600 12nm will work with my motherboard without a bios update, is that  correct.
