Hey, I got a pair of Corsair SP120s to for my H55 cooler. I only have one of them mounted on at the moment, and I came across an annoying problem, it runs at max speed (~2200RPMs) at all times. The motherboard is a MSI 970-G46, which has fan control options in the BIOS and software called Control Center. No matter what setting I do in either the BIOS or MSI's software, the SP120 still runs full speed and it is really annoying. I have tried using Speedfan to turn it down, still no luck. I can set the fan to run at 0% or 20%, it still has a mind of its own and runs at full speed. I have tried plugging it in all 3 of my fan ports on the board (CPU, System1, System2), will not budge from 2200RPM.

Previously I had the stock Lian-Li case fan in its place and it ran very quiet. I don't know what percentage it was running at, but probably around 30% because I could barely hear it. This tells me that the fan port on my board is not faulty. Corsair included a resistor extention with the fan and it now runs at ~1500RPM, still no BIOS or any kind of software will change it.

I searched for a solution before posting this and the recommendations to use MSI's utility did not work for me. I can always resort to getting fan controller, but honestly don't want to. I'd rather just have software to control the fan speeds. This is not an extreme build, just an FX-6300 that I picked up for $110 and the board came out to $40 with Micro Center's combo deal. Just a simple machine to play mainly CS:GO, nothing special.

If anyone has encounted this issue and/or knows a fix, please let me know. I'm really confused as of why Corsair fans will not respond to any kind of software command. It may be faulty, I will check the other fan I have tomorrow and see if that one will run at anything less than 100%.

Has to be connected to the chassis fan header, not cpu fan headers.

Yes, I have it currently hooked up to a chassis fan header (3-pin). I have tried hooking it up to the CPU fan (4-pin) just to see if it would change/give me control over the RPM, it did nothing. It runs at 100% no matter what fan header I use, case fan, CPU, it will not budge from full speed, no software I use (including BIOS) will effect the fan speed.

Are the fans 3-pin or 4-pin?

The SP120s are 3-pin, the case fan ports are 3-pin, the CPU fan is a standard 4-pin.

Most motherboards have option in UEFI/BIOS to choose fan control method between Auto/PWM/Voltage. In your case 3 pin fan you should set voltage.

Did you switch to Software Controlled for the fan headers in Configure->Advanced when testing SpeedFan?

Show love because it's a terrible thing to hate

My BIOS gives me no fan control options other than to set an "auto" fan control. Using this option does nothing paired with the MSI Control Center software.

I played around with Speedfan for quite sometime, but the SP120 will not budge from full speed. I can completely turn off/control my front case fan (stock Lian-Li 140mm) using Speedfan, but no setting will change the SP120.
