Storage Problem

Go to solution Solved by Aninda Muktadir,

I'm using a 600GB HDD as boot drive. I install games on this HDD.But I'm currently running out of space. I've another 1TB HDD. Can I install games on the 1TB drive(Non boot drive)? and will there be any performance issues ?

@Amias Both are same 7200RPM HDD connected via SATA 6GB/s

Oofff. Really?

A platter harddrive ... you're looking at about 80-160 MB/s.

An SSD through SATA, (pretty much any SSD) would give you 550 MB/s.

An NVMe drive, ... 2000MB/s+

@Amias But the games don't need that much read speed.

Sequential reed speed of Battlefield 1 is about 80-110MB/s

Urm.

Okay. Once you're loaded. The game will run just fine. However that loading ... takes forever ... without an SSD?

For game/program installs that don't need backups, i recommend RAID0

I put 6 drives in RAID0 and i get about 80% of the performance of SSDs for my particular use case. Not benchmarks, just general use.

I also only partitioned the first 80% of the volume to "short-stroke" it and get somewhat higher speeds.

I have also tried NVME drives and RAM drives but game loading times are not anywhere close to instant. I thought installing on a Samsung 970 NVME drive would make Witcher 3 load much faster but it's mostly about the same. So better to just use cheap drives in RAID0
