Are these the ryzen 4000 models? I can't see them as the links do not work in europe. Do keep in mind a 17 inch laptop is not really portable

It is the 3700u for ASUS and 3450u for dell. Right on the size, but it will be portable, but doesn't need to be super light.

Do you think the CPU choice would topple having 12gb vs 8gb of ram, and 512gb ssd vs 256?

Maybe. The cpu is a lot better and this thing has hours of extra battery life due to it. The 12gb ram is a big nono either way due to how it can break dual channel in the laptop causing a noticeable performance drop(can work for 8gb running in dual and 4gb in single but it's a gamble unless someone tested it)

Well the alternative is this.

So trying to find something more portable (thinner), as the GPU is unneeded. If I could use some more of your time, do you have a recommendation that is better than this (intel or AMD) with at least 512gb ssd?

This one it's a bit lower quality (of the buildquality of the acer) and the screen is less than the envy but it's good enough and probably better than the ones in your og post
