Budget (including currency): £1500 + change

Country: UK

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mostly gaming, with some light work too. Targeted monitor is the Odyssey G9 - 5120x1440/240Hz.

I put up a previous much wider thread here, and have now narrowed down a potential build and wanted to get feedback on it. I have a separate thread about my choice of mobo and RAM here, and will update this one if I get advice that changes my selection. If I'm not allowed to have multiple threads for a single build, apologies, let me know and I'll remove them.

Here is the build I was thinking of:

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor  (£311.51 @ Overclockers.co.uk)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15S chromax.black 82.51 CFM CPU Cooler  (£82.99 @ Amazon UK)

As mentioned above, the motherboard and RAM are still up in the air as I can't decide. Feel free to contribute to the linked thread about them, or here, I'll obviously be reading both.

I'm still a bit ambivalent about the cooler; I can get the Arctic Freezer II 280 (which I understand is a fan favourite) for about the same price, but I like the simplicity and reliability of air cooling; install and forget. OTOH, the Arctic would be slightly quieter (maybe) and would be better if I wanted to play around with overclocking a couple of years down the line. I'm 70% leaning towards the Noctua though. Have I missed any other notable air coolers in that price range?

Please ignore the case selected; I couldn't find any of the ones I'm considering listed on PcPartsPicker, but have found them available for purchase on websites. Any advice towards this selection would be greatly appreciated. The ones I'm thinking about (just to get an idea of type and budget) are cases like the Phanteks P(4/5)00A, be quiet! Pure 500DX, Lian Li Lancool II mesh. So high airflow, good ergonomics mid towers, ~100 pounds. I'm right in thinking that since these don't have much filtering, they should NOT be kept near (of course never actually on) the floor?

For the PSU, I just chose the first trusted brand 750W+ Gold semi or fully modular I found. 750 should be safe with a margin by my calculations; or will I need 850? I've used Seasonic and Supernova before and I'm happy with them; should I consider any of the others?

And lastly, but definitely not least, the GPU. Of course this will heavily depend on what becomes available, but from what I have seen from reviews the different variants aren't actually that different? Or am I wrong and there are clearly better variants? The TUF seems to be well-liked, as is the XC3, which are both on the cheaper side, so hurray!

Thanks for taking the time to read this folks 🙂

I would say 1 post per build. You don't need different ones for different thingd

5600X is a low wattage cpu. You will be just fine with a sub 30£ cooler. Id-cooling se-224xt basic 27£ on amazon, Arctic Freezer 34 28£, Silentiumpc Fera 3 etc.

And same for motherboard. A 140€ MSI b550 Gaming edge wifi is already a huge overkill.

The Meshify 2 shows up at around 160 pounds, which is more expensive than something like the Phanteks P500A or P400A which is what I'm actually considering. Those just don't show up on PcPartPicker for some reason, but I can see them in stock at retailers. Or are you saying that the Meshify 2 is better than even those?

Huh, I hadn't thought I could get such a cheap cooler and still be effective. Thanks!

The B-550M Mortar is literally the cheapest B-550 with at least 4 SATA ports and on-board WIFI that I could find. Unfortunately, my current setup does not allow for Ethernet cables (router too far from PC would mean having the cables running across more floor than the SO would be comfortable with, and it's a rented flat so I can't pin it to walls), so I do need the WiFi. Even if  go without the WiFi onboard, the cheapest B500 is ~80 pounds, and the price of a decent USB dongle would take me halfway to the Mortar. Not to mention that I don't want my precious USB slots taken by a dongle 😋 So with those constraints, would you suggest the TUF mATX, TUF ATX, or Mortar mATX?

Thanks for taking the time to respond folks!! 🙂

I think it was supposed to be $100 MSRP. So... the Phanteks are cheaper and probably worth it
