M1 macbook air replace my computing needs

i'd like to preface a few things. 1 I have never used a mac, 2 my computer needs aren't crazy, and 3 I need something that lasts a long time (battery and build quality wise). Would you suggest the m1 macbook air for a computer science student? Currently everything i've done in any and all of my classes would 100% work on the m1 (I don't/haven't used docker and vms aren't needed for any classes). I should also note (when we resume inperson classes) every student isn't expected to have a laptop and a computer lab is commonly used (aka I could use it if ever needed). At this point in time i'm struggling to see why I shouldn't get this laptop. Its cpu is faster than my r7 1700 (only at 3.4ghz but even max oc my chip caps lower multi and much lower single core even after termal throttling its still faster than my currently clocked cpu), I don't seriously game anymore, its battery life would mean I don't have to stay near a plug at school (current laptop isn't the best), its much lighter and I wouldn't need to bring the charger, and as a whole I haven't seen anything that would prevent it from being my top choice. The reason why I explained all of these is because I'm asking if there is anything you think should or would prevent me from choosing the macbook air m1 (i'd get it near summer so after almost if not all rough patches have been fixed). This laptop is quite expensive (education discount and 16gb ram since I have a 3tb nas at home for any large files) but would be used for about 3-4 years so if theres a glaring issue i've missed it would be helpful for me to know.

Well if you're looking for the best battery life, it's the best choice currently.

What's bad about M1 is no hardware upgrade, you're stuck with it, but i think 8gb should be enough for at least 5 years later for simple mobile computing.

Things you should be worried for buying apple's pc is the after sales will be super expensive.

If something goes wrong with the machine and you're out of warranty, repairs could be costly as they have to be done by Apple or an authorized technician.
