CPU Overheating

So my CPU temps are terrible again; 60-70C idle at 70% cpu fan speed.

I think that the issue is more likely to be hardware wise that software. I think you could pick up Thermal Grizzly thermal paste or Noctua NT-H2. They are both around $10 and are way better than the one you got with cooler even if it doesn't resolve the issue.

The other thing I can suspect is bad temperature sensor on CPU itself. I'm not quite sure how you could check that tho.

Check if there is difference between temps in BIOS and those in Windows.

Hello,

I recently bought and gathered parts for my first build (see below). I finished building yesterday, and my CPU has been overheating ever since, jumping between 60-75˚C at idle (also evident by the CPU and SYS fans constantly reving).

So far to troubleshoot this issue, I have:

- Removed the cooler and ensured even coverage of the thermal paste.

- Disabled XMP

- Installed the most recent Windows and driver updates

I also followed Kyle's guide when building to double check I didn't miss anything: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhX0fOUYd8Q&ab_channel=Bitwit

If you have any possible solutions, tips or advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Did you use thermal paste?

What case do you have?

I have used thermal paste as it was pre-applied to the wraith stealth stock cooler.

Is the paste dry?

It's possible that it arrived with dry paste.

That's a hot box,RIP airflow.

A lot of people don't realize that airflow is important or just ignore it.

The paste was not dry.

I agree it is quite restricted airflow wise (definitely an oversight by me) but I took the front panel off for unrestricted airflow and still got idle temps between 60-70C :/

Thats odd. Couple of things i can think of on top of my head is...

-Thermal paste application and state

-Is the cooler installed correctly

-Is the fan moving?

-Does the case have exhaust?

-Does it actually idle? What's your cpu useage and clocks like?

How hot does it get during load? Try installimg ryzen master and see if anything is in the red. Can also try changing the windows power plan or play around with voltage.

Do you have any fans on the front?,and how many?,fans are very important for airflow since they push a lot of air fast through the case.

Thermal paste application is even and consistency is wet but not runny nor dry.

The CPU fan is running at 70-100% (1900-2700rpm). I have 3 system fans, two as intakes at the front and one as exhaust at the back. They are all facing the correct way.

On the windows desktop with no other applications the CPU usage is 0-1% at 3600-4200Mhz.

I'll try putting it under a load now

What is the CPU usage on idle?

There is definitely a difference.

In BIOS, the CPU temp is 39-40C and stable with CPU fan at 1100RPM. In Windows using MSI Dragon Center, the temp jumps around anywhere between 55-70C with the CPU fan constantly jumping between 60-100% speed. Furthermore, in AMD Ryzen Master the temp is different and more stable around 48-55C.

I had them both up at the same time and they displayed different readings for the CPU core temps.

UPDATE: After sitting at idle for around 30mins, CPU temps in Ryzen Master are now sitting around 43C, and in Dragon Center jumping between 47-57C at 50-60% fan speed. BIOS temps are the same. Still wierd inconsistencies...

I think I will buy and apply some new thermal paste next, and will get back to you on that soon.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks everyone for your help!

I applied some new thermal paste and bought a Pure rock 2 on sale which has yielded idle temps of around 35C and below 75C under load. I assume a combo of the lesser airflow of my case and stock thermal paste+cooler was to blame. While the new cooler is more than sufficient for a r5 3600, it was heavily discounted plus adds some headroom if I buy a beefier CPU in future.

Another thing I have learnt from this is to not use MSI Dragon centre as CPU temp monitoring. It has extremely misleading and inaccurate readings that added lots of confusion early on in the troubleshooting process.

Thanks again :)
