PSU Recommendation

Hi everyone, I recently bought a Tesla K80 to help with my extensive ML/AI experiments. 

 

This brings my PC specs to the following: 

 

CPU: Core i7-8700k 

RAM: 48GB (2x8GB + 2x16GB) DDR4 3GHz RAM 

SSD: 1x240GB M.2 NVMe + 1x1TB M.2 NVMe (note: will have to get rid of one to deploy the K80). 

HDD: 1TB @ 5400RPM + 700GB @ 7200RPM

Fans: 3x120mm case fans + 1x120mm CPU fan. 

GPU: 1xGTX1080 + 1xTesla K80

 

Without K80 my device is working great with 600W PSU I got from EVGA. 

 

In order to accommodate the addition of the K80 (300W) I tried calculating power consumption and got 750W (I use 4.5GHz on my CPU) and therefore it's recommended I get 800W PSU. 

 

I have found a couple options for PSUs but I am unsure if they are good enough, or if my calculations above are correct. 

 

Here are the PSUs:

GAMEMAX GM-800 80+ Semi-Modular

EVGA 850 BQ 80+ Semi-Modular

EVGA 850 B5 80+ Fully-Modular

 

Things I do not care much about: 

1. Modularity of PSU. 

2. Noise of PSU. 

 

Worth mentioning: during ML experiments, I do not use any of my HDDs. All the work I do is purely on the NVMe.

 

Any advice?

 

One further question: would it be possible to use both PSUs (the one I have and a new one) to power the device if I am not moving it at all?

best case i think would be B5. the others are too low on the tier for me to comfortable recommend with this hardware.

I assumed as much. What worries me a bit is that it says:

I do not plan to overclock any of the GPUs, but I do fear them exceeding their rated wattage and not have enough from the PSU.

It simply means that is 89% efficient or higher on the conversion from AC to DC. As an example if a power supply was 50% efficient (For quick head math) and you were using 1000W DC you would be pulling 1500W AC from the wall so to make up for the inefficiencies of the conversion. 

 

So with that said if your system load is 760W you will be fine on a 850W power supply.

Thanks. I believe my system load is 750w assuming everything is used.

To be safe I'll pay the extra bit for the well rated 850W.

 

I never heard of GAMEMAX before, and my current EVGA 600 B1 has been amazing for about 2.5 years. 

 

EVGA 850 B5 it is.
