Took out ram with 1 retention clip still in.

Jnys

So i'm a dumbass, I needed to blow some dust off my pc because it was basically coverd and i thought it was a good idea to take out the ram. Since i have never taken out ram before i took out 1 stick with 1 retention clip still in. Could this have damaged my slot or ram stick?

what motherboard do you have? Many modern motherboards only have 1 clip on the very top and bottom is static.

does the clip still work when you manually engage it? Chances are, I would wager your RAM wasnt 100% seated properly in the first place.

Everything including the clips work. Im just worried that i could have damaged the slot itself or the ram stick.

possibly, but unlikely. You only will know once you reinsert the ram stick and boot up.

I mean, both kinda. Or execpt i don't know what performance too see. Because my score is lower then benchmarks i am thinking that i broke my ram while taking it out.

If your memory still works, then there is no damage.

ASUS actually made motherboards with a single clip in the DDR3 era. They might still make them now, but I haven't been keeping track. Try not to do it too often if you have the 2-clip design.

Main: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, 16 GB 4400 MHz DDR4 Fedora 38 x86_64

Secondary: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G, 16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, Fedora 38 x86_64

Server: AMD Athlon PRO 3125GE, 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4 ECC, TrueNAS Core 13.0-U5.1

Home Laptop: Intel Core i5-L16G7, 8 GB 4267 MHz LPDDR4x, Windows 11 Home 22H2 x86_64

Work Laptop: Intel Core i7-10510U, NVIDIA Quadro P520, 8 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, Windows 10 Pro 22H2 x86_64

well what do they have in the benchmark? assuming you have dual channel. 2400mhz isn't that fast. I heavily doubt the benchmark has 2400mhz ram

sell it or keep it on hand as spares (mostly just ram).

I guess, The only problem is that i don't have any of the original boxes for them as my computer is kind of a prebuilt.

Would an i9 9900k work good?

i wouldn't bother. While its true that Intel still has the "Gaming crown" for PAST generations, that is no longer the case. while either a i9 9900k or i9 10900k would match that hefty GPU you have, The new AMD cpu's still beat them (I think)
