i see. what kind of damage would i be looking for that my psu could have done?

afaik its not somethin you really see untill something dies.

thermaltake smart is not a notably bad group regulated unit, so it wouldnt be supriced if you dont have any issues.

Danger xD

It *could* work, tho I wouldn't use a psu with a 10 year old design on new hardware but it's your call

i have been using it for four years, do you think it would just randomly kill my whole pc? also if i lower the power draw i could probably get the card to use 150 watts which is barely any higher than my 480.

it won't kill the PC, despite the stories that's not something that usually happens, unless the PSU has no protections at all, that one has the basics, OTP and OCP

might work but you should start thinking of replacing it with something better, just because a psu has mOar waTTs!!1 than another doesn't means is any better, what matters is on the inside and how it delivers power, there are group regulated units that are an old and simple design -inherited from XT/AT- and independent regulated units, newer and better.

jonny will probably do a better job explaining this

so it is safe to put it in there...?

No. There is a chance than poor voltage regulation which is consequence of using a group regulated PSU like your and a modern high power-draw GPU (or build in general) may negatively affect your hardware. But there were no research on this topic and we really have no data on hand. So i wouldn't say it's dangerous, but i can't say it's safe either. And when you put several hundred dollars GPU in a system with 50$ PSU it's just off ...

i see. if something were to go wrong, what would? would i just hear a pop and suddenly everything is done?
