Old case cooling

How should I position them then?

So you don't have a 90mm fan in the rear at all? I would then just have the faster 120mm (2200)RPM fan in the front with the slower 120mm (1450)RPM fan on the side. I would not have any of these fans as exhaust, just purely intake with the pressure inside the case hopefully go out the rear that is open and the one 120mm side fan spot.

I'm refiting my old case MSI something (MSI raptor is the closest case I've found, but mine has the PSU mount on the top part of the case).

The problem: I have 2 Be quiet! fans. 120mm Silent wing 3s. One is 2200 rpm and the second one 1450 rpm. My case can fit one 120mm fan in the front, one 90mm fan in the back and 2 120mm on the side (right in front of the cpu cooler and just under it, basically in front of the gpu). Clearance wise I can give max. of 7 cm on the side.

Questions:

1) Should I put an intake fan right in front of the cpu cooler and make the front the exhaust?

2) Will an side exhaust choke the cpu cooler?

3) Am I right in assuming that the 2200 rpm fan should be the exhaust?

That's the route I would go, the fan that draws the most airflow would be used as exhaust.

I'd push air into the case, rather than out, using the side panel opening (if I am understanding you accurately)

I'm thinking the same but should I have an exhaust in the front though (the 2200 rpm fan), pull the hot air out that way?

Typically, fan orientation is you want airflow from the front and bottom entering the case with exhaust air going out the rear and top if your case provides this orientation of fans.

  1. I would keep the front fan as intake only
  2. No it won't choke the CPU cooler, have these fans as side intake as well.
  3. Yes the 2200 RPM fan as the single exhaust fan.

So 2 intakes? Wont it be too much positive pressure?

I would rather prefer positive pressure in the case than neutral or negative pressure to help alleviate dust buildup over time.

Doesn't negative pressure alleviate dust buildup?

Negative pressure results in more dust buildup inside the case as the differential pressure between inside the case and outside the case is less inside the case, kinda acts like a vacuum. Here's a video more about the three different types of air pressures.

Always tought it's to do with fans pulling in dust

Negative air pressure will just exacerbate dust buildup. No matter what you do, dust will always find its way into the case because we shed thousands if not, millions of skin cells a day. Having your computer elevated off of the floor will reduce the amount of dust buildup over time and having your computer sit on a carpet will just attract more dust (carpets are like dust sponges).

In that case, should the faster fan be in the front or side?

I would still have the faster fan as exhaust as you will have more CFM as intake and since you only have one fan for exhaust, keep that faster fan as exhaust.

Okay, that's what I'm thinking, 2200 rpm in the front, 1450 rpm on the side (lower slot, since I have 2 slots and hot air rises to the top). Both intake.

Installed the fans, did some stress testing.

GPU max temp 52C, idle 31C (RTX2060)

CPU max temp 80C, idle 38C(Ryzen 5 3600)

80C->50C cooling time ~18sec
