Hi,

I have a question. I posted something about this last week, but i had no replies so i thought id try again.

Im experiencing an issue with my pc, that is persisting through different motherboards and windows versions.

The issue that im experiencing is that my sound makes a popping sound when i suddenly stop audio.

Since i bought my pc for audio editing, it basically makes it useless for the past 5 weeks. It is driving me insane and im getting desperate.

The problem started after i fixed some issues withing my PC. This was my first ever PC build, so i made a mistake with placing my ram. I placed it in the A1 and B1 slots instead of the A2 B2 slots. This caused my pc to always start in a bios forced safe mode setting. I was able to use my pc perfectly apart from the occasional performance issue withing ableton. This issue also caused my pc to sometimes take a long time to boot, because of this safemode posting issue. So after troubleshooting this safe mode issue, i found out that it was caused by my ram somehow. So i repositioned my RAM modules, and the safe mode problem went away. Also the weird performance issues went away. Then i tried to work in Ableton again and all of a sudden i get this weird popping sound when i start or stop audio. (like a jack being plugged in to a live amp etc. Really loud snapping/clicking sound) I have since been trying to fix this issue with no luck.

It somehow sounds as if a driver is causing the issue. The loud clicks happen also if my audio interface gets recognized, or when i use my hdmi audio/motherboard headphone amp and random system messages/sounds get played. These have about 2-500ms lag between they show and when they pop in with a clicking sound. The issue im having with thinking its driver related, is that i cant solve the issue.. clean installs, driver updates, driver replacements etc.All with no succes.

I also tried booting with onboard graphics and removing my gpu, with no luck. Problem persists.

After this i read that the issue might have been related to my chipset, so as the newbie i am, i bought a new Motherboard, experiencing this issue from the first clean install i made.

Now after everything im starting to fear its either an issue i cant seem to find within windows, or an hardware related issue that i cant single out and replace... I tried doing memtest, with no errors detected. I also did M.2 and SSD diagnostics, without any errors detected.

The problem also persists when changing XMP profiles or completely disabling it and running the ram at lower frequencies.

I read online that it might be caused my automatic voltage being applied in the bios, or the ram timings but im a bit scared to tinker around with these settings.

Now i can however game without this issue. I think its because there is always sound actively playing so the clicking does not happen, it might however be information that can help.

PC-specs (4month old pc)

intel 10600k

MSI Mag z490 tomahawk.

Corsair vengeance 3200mhz 2x16gb.

cooler master 650gold psu.

samsung NVME m.2 500gb

crucial 2tb ssd.

I have been trying many different sollutions the past few weeks:

- audio optimization as advised by windows, sweetwater and focusrite. (i did all the powermanagement options, usb energysaving, disabling c-state etc. nothing of the audio optimizations get rid of the problem)

- Reinstalling windows with different builds (20H2, 2004may2019, 1903 and 1903v2) (clean, no network installs. The problem pops up as soon as i install an audio driver. Wether this is Realtek, windows hd audio sollution or my audio interface drivers. They all start doing the popping sound.)

- Replacing my motherboard, thinking might have been an chipset issue or something.

- Enabling/disabling XMP, different speeds and auto settings.

- Use DDU in safe mode, but the problem persists even in this safe mode with all these drivers uninstalled.

- Latencymon tests, PC is suitable for realtime audio editing. (does show climbing latency numbers in the dxgkernel and nvlddmkm.sys)

Please does anyone have a sollution? im beginning to regret the choice of building my own pc at the moment... thinking it might be better to switch to a different platform and have everything at least work without any issues. So if anyone does know what to do or is willing to help, please let me know:)

Sincerely,

Kevin.

Did you try updating directx? That might help.

Also do you use a codec pack? Klite codecs basic pack for example might help.

I do audio work as well. I have an audio card. A creative one. I get great audio from it. You might want to consider getting a good audio card instead of the onboard.

Thank you for replying! sorry for my late answer, i had work.

I have checked my directx version, and its the latest. The dxdiag also states that there arent any problems detected. The codec pack is also installed, this also does not solve the issue.

As for the sound card, i have a focusrite clarett 2pre audio interface. So the snapping sound is audible when i use my gpu sound out, my onboard audio and also when i use the audio interface.

So sadly im still stumped by whats causing this issue:(

Thanks for replying though!
