Is my PSU enough?

I'm planning to pair my i5-4440 with my friend's old r9 390, would my 480w PSU be enough?

but if you give us more details (MoBo GPU PSU, Manufactur/version and Age) for a educated guess

I would say no, R9 390 is power hungry and while you likely would not draw 480W that is not the primary concern. My guess is that the 480W PSU is both old and an OEM unit? So you'd be flirting with danger regardless. 

 

Do you know the model of your PSU and age etc?

What model is the PSU if you wouldn't mind me asking? If you can't, get a be quiet! System Power U9 500W or a Corsair CX450. Low quality PSU's can catch on fire and even explode, taking your PC with it.

It's just an HP PSU in an HP Envy 700-214, so it uses its own motherboard and is approx ~7 years old

the GPU is a reddragon r9 390 coming from a friend's old system

To be honest, I wouldn't mind the stupid thing exploding. It can't keep up with anything anymore but as I already have a pc my parents aren't able to and won't shell out 1300+ dollars so i can game more

The 390 will blow that PSU easily.

 

 

And another point.. be a lot more grateful to your parents, when they are not here you will be doing this all yourself, look at what you already have.

I have a friend who's giving me his old psu actually, so that solves the problem.
I'm not trying to be ungrateful to my parents, I'm not saying they SHOULD buy me a new pc, just saying they can't and wouldn't. The desktop itself was given by my grandfather for free because it wasn't able to keep up for his photography.
