I recently got a new mobo (ASUS ROG STRIX Z390- E GAMING) and was using it fine and noticing that my games were now playing a lot better than before... I then noticed that my i79700k was running at 4.95ghz, which it shouldn't as I haven't overclocked it, and also was at 100°c. I then immediately turned off the pc and on again to see if it was a glitch to find that even sat at idle it runs between 3ghz and 4.95ghz jumping up and down irratically with only 5%-20% CPU usage. I've taken a look in the BIOS and noticed that turbo mode was turned on but turning it off only caps the clock speed to 3.6ghz and it still runs at a constant 3.6ghz even with 5%-20% usage like before and around 60°c.

Does anyone know of a fix or any settings to turn off in the BIOS as the board does have an AI overclocking feature that as far as I can see is definitley turned off?

The board I had before was a Gigabyte B360 HD3, I had no issues with that and have put the same CPU and CPU cooler on the new board.

I used Intel Power Gadget and MSI Afterburner to monitor and make sure that I was getting correct values for temps and clock speed as well as task manager.

PC specs;

i79700k

ASUS ROG STRIX Z390-E Gaming

Gigabyte RTX2070

32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro RAM (3200mhz)

Samsung 970 Evo Plus M.2 SSD

unless is it constant no matter what, for minutes? Because some motherboards auto clock CPU's to their max GHZ and run them indefinitely thus can see large power draw and heat output... I forget the setting or software on the motherboard or how to turn it off, but I know certain motherboards do this, and specifically I know MSI and ASUS ROG boards do this. sorry I can't be more help. It's possible this had been turned off at some point for you and a bios or motherboard software update may have turned it back on for you, thus you are now seeing this.

From a bit of research I think my new board has the intel boost tech which my old board didn't support so it didn't go very high clock speed wise and temps were ok because it wasn't boosting? Now obviously it can boost and that means it's getting hotter and my previous cooler is now no longer suitable. That's what I believe is happening.

It turbo boosts upto 4.9GHz, it's normal behaviour.

Currently I'm using a Coolermaster Hyper TX3 Evo which was good enough with my old board and my i79700k as it never boosted high enough because it couldn't due to board restrictions. Now it can boost to 4.9ghz obviously it gets hotter so I'm gonna need a new cooler I'm pretty sure of that. If you can suggest a good air cooler that would be great too!

What cooler are you using?

Dark Rock Pro 4, the TX3 is inadequate.

Cheers pal, I'll get that sorted straight away! It was working fine before but obviously with my new board my i7 runs a lot better. Might have an issue with space as the ram I use is quite tall so the Pro 4 may not fit. Would that NZXT Kraken M22 be any good?
