I'm a virtual teacher with a new build centered around a Ryzen 3 4300g quad core with Vega 6 graphics. It's been a huge improvement over my old Dell XPS 13 laptop.

Usual workload is streaming class over zoom with an LG c920x webcam, and a Blue Yeti X mic. This is done while running an LMS (learning management system) called Canvas, and gradebook/attendance software called Synergy. I'm using outlook email simultaneously and often microsoft word/powerpoint/excel, as well as streaming music or videos via YouTube through Zoom to my students.

When not actively in class I'm doing much of the same multi-tasking minus Zoom, but I also create and edit 1080p lecture videos using screen capture and the same mic and camera from above. The videos are exported as 1080p mp4 files and uploaded to an unlisted YouTube channel, then imported to EdPuzzle for my students. My computer does chug a but creating these videos. I do about four videos a week, typically about 45 minutes long each on average.

I would also like to do some light gaming. I am thinking of a low end current gen GPU sometime in the next year or so when the crazy demand slows down.

I use a 4-bay synology NAS for storage, I use an LG gaming mouse with the hero sensor (I forget which model) and an Ergodox-EZ mechanical keyboard. I also use Synergy (different from above) to share the mouse and keyboard with my laptop.

Monitor is a 34" 1440p ultrawide from LG with 10bit color and 75hz over freesync. Not a gaming monitor but great for productivity, and color accuracy is very good.

With all of that said - I am considering a purchase of a Ryzen 5 5600x. I have an Aorus Elite AX B550 mobo and 4x8GB of DDR 4 3200 C16 RAM as well as a Noctua NH-U12s cooler.

Given everything I've said above, is the Ryzen 5 5600x likely to be sufficient for my needs for several years? I want to be able to button up this build with a CPU and GPU purchase and not have to worry about changing hardware for either work or light 1440p gaming for ideally a good five years or so. The Ryzen 7 part seems expensive for the two extra cores and the Ryzen 9 parts seem like massive overkill for my needs.

It likely will be, but it would be silly to commit to anything this close to launch day. Wait a bit and see benchmarks.

Oh yes I'm definitely going to wait. More just thinking ahead. The price to performance in the Ryzen 7 part just doesn't seem worth it... but we will all find out I suppose.

I was more uncertain how many cores I actually need for that sort of work load. I'm not someone who intended to be making videos and streaming for a living - but the pandemic has forced everyone to adapt.

If you want you can buy a 4650g (6 cores) or 4750g (8 cores), you can find it in Aliexpress.

Those are OEM parts, so it's not readily available worldwide.

Best thing is you don't need a GPU for these, and i think 6 or 8 cores can last you like 5 more years.

Performance wise it's same as 3600 or 3700x, but with build in vega gpu.

3400g you mean? I don't think AMD releasing 4300g.

No it is actually a 4300g. It's a brand new OEM part I pulled from an otherwise insufficient prebuilt system. 4 zen 2 cores with Vega 6 graphics. However it's only PCI-E 3 and it only has 6mb of cache, and only boosts to 3.8ghz. So while it is a new part it is still very basic.

The 5600x is set to be over $300. The previous gen, 3600, it a much better choice IMO, 6c+12t. You could also pair it with a 1650 super or a 5600xt.

JUST MY OPINION. If you really want the 5600x, be my guest, but it sounds like you don’t need all of the power that comes with a $100-$150 difference.

That's a fair point, and definitely worth considering. It may come down to relative benchmarks and where I'm at financially when I actually make the purchase.

I'm glad the consensus seems to be that I don't need MORE than 6 cores for the time being though. That's reassuring.

Nice you can probably sell it with a new 3400g price.

3.8 is not that bad, really for general purpose that's more than enough.

5600x is good, but you also need to change the motherboard, as i think that motherboard would not get the 5000 updated bios.

And including the GPU it's almost a full system overhaul, better just to sell the whole piece and build a new one.

It's a brand new B550 mobo so it definitely does support it. All I should need is the CPU and GPU, everything else is great. You are right that that's still a lot of cash though.

Yeah, no more than 6 cores is needed for what you will be doing.

yeah, you should probably wait for the benchmarks to come out to come to a final decision.

Also, yes, almost all b450+b550 mobos will support the 5000 series with bios updates.

Yes that's about the price breakdown I was thinking. If I could sell my existing Ryzen 3 4300g cpu for ~$100 all the better. I have two sticks of random 4GB DDR4 3200 with no heat spreaders too that I could bundle with the CPU when I sell it. Maybe push the sale price closer to $150 and pay for a chunk of the new CPU.

That's most of a build for someone as long as they can grab a cheap mobo, psu, ssd and case. Heck I may even have a cheap ssd I could bundle in as well. That would get someone really close on a budget build.

Just realized I could also bundle in the cooler from my new CPU since I'll be sticking with my noctua cooler. And I have some spare mice and keyboards So I really could build a nice bundle for someone:

Ryzen 3 4300g w/ Vega 6 graphics

Stock cooler from the hypothetical 5600

2x4GB DDR4 3200 ram

SSD

Mouse/keyboard

Selling that combo might be worth most of the cost of my new CPU to someone. They just need case, mobo, and psu and they are out the door on a basic computer.
