NAS Help!

Hey guys I am looking to put together a NAS and want to use free NAS as my OS. I have a old dell that needs a new power supply and bigger hard drives to hold my data. Do you guys think an old Athlon 64 X2 with 1g of ram will be ok or should I by a new hardware, or a premade one? All I want this to do is exist as a Plex server.

1gb of ram with freenas is a no-go. FreeNas demands at least 4gb on the super low end. And an aditional 1gb of ram for every TB of disk space you add.

 

Edit: the processor should be fine though.

Linux in general will happily run on such a system and it should be able to max out a 1 gbit/s network on sustained transfers at least. You will want to avoid RAM heavy filesystems such as ZFS but otherwise a basic RAID setup and ext will perform adequately and on the lower RAM amount.

How much storage do you want to put in it? 4gb is still pretty low.

Ok, 4gb would be the minimum i would go with, but remember with freenas the more ram the happier freenas will be.

I use nas4free with 512mb ram, It handles veeam backups quite well and I have never had any issues with it.

Break it. Put it back together.Then hope like hell it works. Failing that Use Gaffer Tape.... lots of it. If that doesn't work then either there isn't a problem or you haven't used enough gaffer tape,

Do you use the ZFS file system? And how much hdd space do you have?

I use NFS shares and I have just over 2TB

Break it. Put it back together.Then hope like hell it works. Failing that Use Gaffer Tape.... lots of it. If that doesn't work then either there isn't a problem or you haven't used enough gaffer tape,
