wifi help

hi, i dont know much about wifi and internet, but my wifi connection is really bad.  download is supposed to be 18mbps but is about 12 on speed tests. my dad told me we cant upgrade the wifi because its through a phone line or something. is there any way i can get faster speeds? i'm in the bay area btw. and should I switch my dns server?

WiFi really depends on a number of factors such as how far away you are from the router? How many walls are in between you and the router? What material is the wall made of? etc. Since it's a broadcast medium rather than a wired connection, you can expect to see speeds slightly less than advertised. Which in your case, seems about right.

Use ethernet cable, if not connected direct to your device, then you can buy an access point and install it closer to where you use the wifi. Newer standards like ac of ax are faster, but more expensive. Still, if you want speed, the best solution is cable direct to PC.

Your probably on DSL. DSL is SLOW. Unless you live right next to the phone co itself your never going to be able to get faster speed. 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
