So i finally convinced my parents to get a huge wifi upgrade from our isp, going from 32 down to 400 down. so i wanna take the opportunity to redo my parents house wifi since we are 5(Mom, dad, me, my brother and sister) and so good wifi is essential, i also wanna build a system so that when i move out, i want them to have dope as wifi. we also have a huge number of devices connected(atleast 22). so i wanna go with a ubiquiti system, but i am kind of overwhelmed where to start. Can i buy a Unifi dream machine and that should a good start, or should i get a dream machine pro and some access points and is that all i need or are there other things ? My current router is an asus router that use to be pretty good, but with covid, it needs constant rebooting cuase it will just crawl to halt, it seems pretty flacky with devices sometimes such as chromecast and google homes.

I use Ubiquiti at home. I went with their cheap Edgerouter and two of their AP Lites. Love it. Except ever since I moved into my new house, Bell (my ISP) seems to be aware I am not using their hardware and have limited my 1gb down to roughly 600mbs but I still get 1gb upload, so I'm not too concerned.

Really like the Ubiquiti gear. Looking to maybe replacing that Edgerouter with a USG here in the future to keep everything in the Unifi family.

So do you think starting with dream machine and then building from there is a good idea ? i would still get the option to add on later. cause its really expensive and i dont wanna screw it up.

I Honestly dont know but Ubuiquiti is The Way To Go I want To Upgrade mine but i would also do if theres a posibility wherever do u think is essential try to do ethernet runs like for game setup, the media console on the living room where a lot of internet usage is gonna be happening because even do ubiquiti acces points do have a good buffer for devices built in i would also just try to save that bandwith as best as u can so tvs would be a great thing to have ethernet we did that ourselves and they dont give a single issue or smart boxes a lot of them have eterneth ports  but even do wifi with ubiquiti is something you are not going to regret wherever you can do wired is the best thing

obviously is if you want this is just a suggestion but it would be great to have that done would be a nice addition.

I Am To The Service Of Anyone Hope You Are Having A awesome day and are staying safe.

That doesn't look like something I would go for. But it depends on what your going for. Honestly, wired where possible is the best solution. If it were me, I'd go USG>Ubiquiti APs and Switch (either managed or unmanaged depending on your needs) then from Switch to rest of the house where wired drops can be utilized. I'll go snap a pic of my current setup using the EdgeRouter X.

@nicholastank2 - A UDM is a good all-in-one solution, but you'll need to be prepared to spend $300 up front and require switches for ethernet expansion. For a medium-sized home this should work adequately for WiFi coverage and at the same time allow for expansion in the future.

Can you please answer the following questions:

  1. How big is your home? How many floors? Can you post a sketch of the floor plan? Mark where the ISP device is located.
  2. Do you have the ability to run ethernet to all floors?

Which EdgeRouter? I know for a fact that the ER-X and ER-X-SFP can support close to full gigabit connections if you upgrade to the latest firmware and activate hardware offloading. In the default configuration, it will be limited to 500-600Mbps.

The USG is only needed if you want the full UniFi Controller dashboard, but it's not necessary. The EdgeRouter line is quite powerful and has quite a lot of features under the hood. I actually have a similar setup to yours using an ER-X connected to UniFi switches and APs and it works pretty well.

Refer to my earlier post.  That's exactly why I am considering it.  And I guess at the same time take the opportunity to get something with built in SFP so I can ditch my fiber to Ethernet converter.

Also I'm well aware of hwnat offloading and it's enabled.  You will only be getting something like 300mbs otherwise. This ain't my first rodeo ;)

It might be because I dropped my fiber to ethernet adapter on the concrete floor when installing. If I plug my ISP's gear in and use it as an ONT and put my ERX on its Advanced DMZ boom gigabit comes back. So I'm well aware it can handle it
