why is a disk image as big as the drive & not only the data being backed up, My dad has windows on a spare 1 tb drive, windows is not nearly that big. The image is always the same  size as the drive. Same with a 250 gb drive image same size. I didn't think create disk image put all the disk even free space in the file.

A true "image" of a drive has every bit exactly where it was on the drive, so they inherently need to be the exact same size as the source drive.

 

There are softwares that backup only the allocated files (ignoring free space), and will produce "images" smaller than the source drive (some will even compress the output data file for even more space savings).

if It's a img file, its a direct clone of the partition / file system. so if the partition / file system is 50GB and there is 2GB of Data, the img will be 50GB.

If you want to resize it, you will need to determine how many blocks are in use in the file-system and use resize2fs to resize it and then e2fsck to make sure you didn't damage it in the process. More than likely you will need to pass the "-f" flag to both to ignore warnings and force it.
