When launching Total War Shogun 2 the game opens and appears to begin the long loading time. However after some time the Steam client will completely close as if its been ALT+F4'ed in the background thus causing Shogun 2 to go down with it. This problem also occurs when doing anything multiplayer related on Civilization 5.

This problem is not a new one for me, the problem has persisted through multiple full hard drive formats as well as basically a whole new system bar the hard drive. I think this eliminates every other variable but the Steam client itself.

I am completely at a loss right now as to what this could actually be, i have posted a ticket on the Steam support forums but it will probably be about 40 years before i get a response; so any help on here would be much appreciated.

I have 8gb of ram so i dont think so. Both games used to run flawlessly even when i only had 4gb of ram

I would reinstall Steam and/or both the games.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium, so i don't think there's any OS incompatibility

Did you install it in the default location?

Does It happen just with steam games or games in general no matter the software.

Well im very limited in my games outside of Steam. Really the only big game i have is Battlefield 4 which runs perfectly fine for extended periods of time. Other than Battlefield the only other one is Minecraft, im not too sure its applicable but anyways it runs perfectly fine as well. The problem as far as i can see is only with the Steam client.

Could it be the hard drive? I dont know its a long shot but the hard drive is some Western Digital drive that's been running pretty much non stop for three years, plus i wouldn't exactly say its had a perfect life; its been banged about abit because my pc is sorta moved around allot.

Have you looked at your windows logs to see if there are any hints in there?
