1700x bottleneck for RTX 3080 in VR

Hi

 

Currently running an RTX 2080 with a Ryzen 1700x. Would upgrading to a 3080 graphics card be bottlenecked by the the CPU? Running only VR games on pimax 5k+

I would assume so, how much would depend on the output resolution. I haven't seen extensive tests with older generations but I am sure they will be done. The question is if you actually need the extra performance if you already have a 2080? Before upgrading the graphics card, I'd look into Zen 2 CPUs first (like a 3700X).

from jayztwocents, a 2070s / 5700xt starts botllenecking at r7 1700, but it doesnt mean 2080 will be slow, just slower than other cpu and still faster than 2070s

With already having a 2080, I'd really advise upgrading CPU before GPU.

It seems I do. VR is really hard on the hardware, I barely get 50FPS with medium details in iRacing. Resolution is 2560x2880

What would be the one to get without changing the motherboard as well?

Depends on what motherboard it is.

It's an Asus Prime X470.

It should handle anything you put in it. It may need a BIOS update for the Ryzen CPUs being announced on Oct 8th though.

 

A 3600 will outperform your current CPU by about 10% and only costs $200.
