A FX-8320 would likely be a better option and they go for $100 on sale.

Its a decent CPU, slightly old now, but still great. It would be great for gaming and although it doesn't have some of the advantages of newer Intel CPUs it will still be good for video rendering :)

this CPU is still just as good as the current gen amd FX line, core for core, clock for clock. dont quote me on it, but id be comfortable to say its better than a 83x0, clock for clock

I'm not sure on that one. The 1055t is a 6 core CPU, and the stock clocks are slightly higher (although if you OC them that won't matter). In video rendering cores are king, so in theory the 1055t would be better. In practice I'm unsure. If you plan to OC the i7, but not the Phenom then go with the i7 :)

They are still very good, but I had an i5 650, which couldn't perform to the level or current i3 CPUs (The 650 was a dual core CPU with Hyperthreading). The 83x0 series are 8 core CPUs, so would perform signififcantly better in video rendering than older i5 CPUs (not sure about old i7s due to Hyperthreading).

They're about the same single threaded performance at stock but OC'd the 920 will win.

the 920 should blow the 945 away if its a phenom x4 945 that you're talking about.

im a bit of an amd fan (no diehard though) but those 920's are still pretty good.

at 4.2ghz it should be pretty close to an 8350 in rendering, going by what cinebench says.

The D steppings of the i7 920's would often go up to 4.4Ghz, they were great overclockers. Unlike the C stepping you don't have to turn off hyperthreading to get there either. The i7 920 will still outperform the fx 8350 for a lot of things, the sad reality is that this 5 year old CPU is still quicker than pretty much anything AMD has produced since despite its obsolescence. In raw rendering terms an 8350 may well be quicker today just because of all the threads it has, but you have a hyperthreaded first gen i7 there and its pretty amazing and only about 30% off clock for clock of a modern Haswell! Ridiculous how little the performance has progressed over the years.

Sure, the 920 is a great little beast, especially compared to your Phenom, but I think it's old nonetheless. Wouldn't a 2600k be a better option, since you can up it to 3770k if you want later on? (I assume budget is the issue here?)

Just make sure it's a D0, like @BrightCandle said. Mine is a C0 and it can only hit 4.0 GHz with HT off or it's way too hot for my little Akasa. (95 deg C in prime95, 4.0 GHz, HT on). 3.8 is the highest acceptable frequency for mine.
