Home server help

GeneralGusher

Hey

i have this old pic that no one uses and was thinking about making it into a home server. I got the idea to first host my discord bit 24/7 with  it. I read that you need to install some OS but was wondering if I can just use windows instead. Meaning I won’t need to install any other os. I would appreciate all the help I can get.

Hey,

Discord Bots won't require much performance, unless you're running an extremely busy server your computer sure will be fine.

One thing to keep in mind would be power consumption, so it would be good to know what Specs that old PC has.

There are many different ways to go about this, so could you please first answer the following two questions:

1. Is a Discord Bot the only thing you want to host, or would you also want to host a game server or NAS later on?

2. How much work are you willing to put into setting it up and maintaining it?

Greetings!

I will eventually start to run other stuff on it. I also wanted to have it so they I can store random stuff on it and being able to access it from a laptop or any other of in my house.

I am willing to do work but I would appreciate if you can tell me what type of work/maintenance I have to do on it.

I would strongly recommend you to use Proxmox, it's an open-source Virtualization Host.

That is great if you want to run Gameservers etc. later on, as you can run them in a Container or Virtual Machine so you can't really break anything.
But it is quite some work to set it all up properly and while it can be fun, you'll have to read through Wikis a lot etc.
