Displayport adapter disaster

Hey there, I'm new here, but I've been following Linus for ages and I've finally ran into a problem that Google couldn't resolve, so hopefully someone here can help. There's quite a bit to say, but bare with me as this is a rather weird issue.

 

- Bought a new GPU (1080ti), I use two monitors with DVI ports so I had to find an adapter for the second monitor, namely a DVI-female to Displayport-male, so I can connect the second monitor to the GPU.

- Got adapter, turn off my PC, plug in the adapter in the GPU and nothing. The monitor(1) connected to the DVI port turned on, but the monitor(2) connected through the adapter showed a black screen.

- Turn PC off, try a different displayport on the GPU and nothing again. Then because I'm really smart I unplugged the adapter while the PC/monitor was still running to try the last port, and again nothing. (that's where I think I fked up by hotswapping)

 

- Shut off the PC to try connecting the adapter to the other monitor(1) and test it that way as well and I got  "No input signal" again

- I remove the adapter entirely and connect the original monitor(1) back to how it previously was and nothing, "no input signal"

- Shut off the pc, try the second monitor(2) by using the GPU's DVI port, and it works.

 

- let it boot up, but when I enter windows it defaults to no driver resolution with everything scaled down, and around 30sec later the screen goes black and the driver works again and the resolution is correct.

- I was certain that I shorted something on the GPU when I hotswapped, so I connect the original monitor(1) back to the DVI port, and it works! when it previously didn't

- I think to myself that it's probably static that caused the initial "No signal" on the adapter

 

- turn PC off again, plug in the adapter in the GPU again while it's connected to the second monitor(2) and now neither monitors will display, just "No input signal".

- shut everything off thinking that it's static, remove the adapter entirely, but now no matter what I do, my original monitor(1) connected through DVI won't display even though it's the only one connected to the GPU, so I change the DVI cables between monitors and again no signal

- connect the second monitor(2) through GPU's DVI again, and it works...

 

Did I just buy a displayport adapter that fked up my GPU, or did I mess up when I hotswapped the adapter when the PC was still running ?

Added confusion, now whenever I boot in, after about 15sec, the monitor goes black and turns on again, then it works fine after, something that never happened before.

 

So yeah...did I mess up the GPU ? did the adapter mess up the GPU ? am I missing something ? it's been quite a stressful 2 hours and I still have no idea where things went wrong

Okay, was going to say try and reset CMOS, but that would be if you overclocked it too much. I’m not sure then, not super tech savvy. I’ve just heard CMOS is a main problem that can happen.

Yeah, sorry about that, I did try to be as simple yet as descriptive as possible to avoid unnecessary questions.

Both monitors are the same but the DVI cables are different, one is DVI-D (single link) and the other is DVI-D (dual link), currently the one that works is DVI-D single link. I already swapped the cables around though, with no fixes.

 

I'm also pretty sure that the adapter is passive, as it was rather cheap.

fastest way to find out is if it has a bulky box attached to it, or just a small converter.

but price is also one good way

 

a passive adapter only outputs digital signal if it's converting from DP, so idk if your monitors would need anything other than digital signal to work.

The adapter never worked and I just checked and it's indeed passive, which might explain why it never displayed anything.

Problem is, my main monitor still doesn't display if I connect it to my GPU through DVI, which is what I used until now with no issues.

starting with 10 series, Nvidia GPU do not output analogue signal anymore, which your display may need to function.

The 1080ti comes with a DVI port, which I used without any issues at all. It wasn't until now when I tried connecting my second monitor through the adapter that everything went wrong.

hmm... I've never heard of a monitor killing a display port like that

though it may happen.

got no clue then.

 

what other input does your monitor have? if they have VGA you could consider getting active adapters for them

though take note that even active adapters have issue with 20 series GPU. maybe it's time to upgrade your monitors.

Yeah, I'm waiting for a good 144hz monitor to come back in stock, but I still don't understand how an adapter messed up everything so badly.
