So in theory there shouldn't be a problem, just plop in the ssd and get windows to be able to read from the hard drive right?

Correct. To be 100% sure though I recommend you unplug the old HDD while installing Windows on the new SSD, this way you know Windows isn't going to put the bootloader on the wrong drive (which it loves to do).

I work in my family's business that has some really old computers (Intel core 2 duo)

As the only tech guy in the family i was planning on upgrading(adding a ssd) the Core 2 Duo PC specifically however i have some question regarding what would happen.

Currently the (Intel core 2 duo) is running on a 500GB hard drive which has Windows 7 which has a lot of office documents

If i were to put in a 256GB ssd with windows 10 into the PC, will the PC still have/read all the data on the 500GB hard drive?

I know i can go into the bios and make it so that it boots up from the ssd but will there be a problem in having 2 different versions of windows on 2 different drive?

Thanks in advance

It will be fine. The only issue you'll have is permission issues accessing the files on the old drive from the new install but you can simply take ownership and assign permissions for the new account (Windows will often do this for you when you first try to open a folder you don't have access too).

Main Rig:-

Ryzen 7 3800X | Asus ROG Strix X570-F Gaming | 16GB Team Group Dark Pro 3600Mhz | Corsair MP600 1TB PCIe Gen 4 | Sapphire 5700 XT Pulse | Corsair H115i Platinum | WD Black 1TB | WD Green 4TB | EVGA SuperNOVA G3 650W | Asus TUF GT501 | Samsung C27HG70 1440p 144hz HDR FreeSync 2 | Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS |

Server:-

Intel NUC running Server 2019 + Synology DSM218+ with 2 x 4TB Toshiba NAS Ready HDDs (RAID0)

You can do one of two options:

1. Clone your hdd to ssd using Macrium Reflect and forget about hdd.

2. Unplug hdd and install win10 on SSD and forget about win7. You'll still have access to your old drive (you can connect it later, after installation), but you'll have new os. Win10 works pretty good on core2duo.

I recommend second option.

Alright I'll make sure to remember that.
