(3080 & PSU Question) Would it be unwise of me to attempt to keep my 650W PSU?

Wolfgang95

Hi All,

I'm thinking about rebuilding my PC over the year. With the 3080 announcement plus AMD teasing a new products announcement in October, I figure now is a good time. I built my current PC back nearing the end of 2016. I figure I could upgrade the GPU now and then jump to the CPU when the new shiny stuff comes out. I'm even willing to ditch my light 4.4 GHz OC. I ran my build through the outervision PSU calculator but things are a little tight (recommended PSU wattage being 657W). https://outervision.com/b/fHIHiF

I would prefer to wait on changing the PSU to a higher wattage for when I do a fresher build, so I don't have to re-cable manage my current case. I plan to give or sell (on the cheap) my one day to be "old computer" to a friend or family member.

Would it be unwise for me to stick with my current PSU while trying for the GPU upgrade? I know NVIDIA is recommending 750W and It's seeming like the answer will probably be yes on this being unwise, but it's worth an ask ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks!

My current PSU is the EVGA 650 GQ.
The CPU will be AMD, as for the model that will depend on what AMD announces. If I were to do a full build now it would be a 3700X, so if they announce something new I would probably go for its next gen counterpart.

Well, when the reviews for the 3080 come out on Wednesday, we'll know it's real power draw. I think it's safe to assume that your PSU is fine for a 3080, at least wattage wise, but I would upgrade the PSU anyway since the GQ isn't the best quality.

Wait, GQ doesn't mean "Good Quality?" Just kidding but you do make a good point 😁

I suppose I'll give it a shot in the event I can be quick enough to get my hands on a 3080. If I get a random shutdown then I'll spring for the PSU sooner. I'll have to peruse that PSU tier list.
